Single female tiel and eggs

Postby babyluv12 on Thu Jan 18, 2007 2:09 am

How long do I have to leave the eggs (unfertile) in the cage- my tiel is sitting on them less and less but I am afraid if I take them too early she will try and replace it ...this is her first time?

My female laid one egg and I was told to leave it with her for 2 weeks. How long have they been in her cage?

I used to leave them until the bird abandoned them completely. Now that my tiels have 13-14 hour nights, they seldom lay any eggs at all. I hope you have the same good fortune.

Hi Babyluv,

The incubation period is normally between 21 and 28 days, after 28 days the females usually lose interest and then can you remove them. As you probably know, there is a possibility that she will lay more if you take them away too soon.

PS: Hows the p**p training going??

Hi. Glad to hear from you...She took to it REALLY well! She knows the command now and where to go. I say "poop" or "caca" and she does it! :D I am aware of what they do when you take them away too quickly so I was trying to avoid encouraging that-She has 4 eggs (her 1st time-2yrs old) and she has been sitting on them less and less-I am getting ready to upgrade their homes (5 budgies and her) at the end of this month so should I move the eggs with her? What is your recommendation? Someone told me to take them out one at a time but when?

Yep, poop training works!! :D Clever birdies!!

I would leave them where they are and not change cages until she has completely lost interest in them ... but that's me.

A lot of people recommend moving them to a new area (cage in your case) because then they will feel unsettled and stop sitting on the eggs. Also, because of the change she won't be inclined to lay more (Unsettled).

Maybe get some more ideas, and then make up your mind. Let me know what you decide!

PS - Gorgeous photos!! Your feathered family looks happy and healthy!! :)

Thanks! I get camera crazy with them sometimes- they're too cute and photogenic- need a better quality camera though (this one is a $10.00 mini digital)-works ok though. I am hoping she will be done sitting on them by the time I am ready to buy the cages-she probably will with the way things are going (she's sitting on my hand tapping extra keys right now and not on the eggs :D )
PS- I don't like the idea of moving her just so she is "unsettled"- I'd rather give her some time...The last egg was on the 10th so by the end of the month I think she'll be ok.

Try leaving the eggs in the "old" cage. When you get the new cage, set it up with her on your shoulder or nest to it. With you setting the perches and food dishes, she'll get interested and come over. I do this when I wash the cage, luna can't stay away when I'm cleaning it and arranging her stuff!

It might encourage her to leave the eggs in the old "nest" for a new and bigger home.

Thanks- I have been watching her and she spends more and more time away from them than before- she's so silly that sometimes she forgets to sit on all of them and leaves some out then remembers about them later on...I'm just afraid of taking them away too soon and triggering her to replace them...she basically only sits on them at night ...or when sleeping.
