Molting... again?

Postby bubbabird85 on Wed Jan 10, 2007 1:57 pm

Ok... I thougt it was normal for birds to molt every six months or so... and that is what normally happens with Bubba... but it has been aobut 3 months (maybe less) since he has molted and dropped a lot of feathers... and now it seems to be happening agian. Is this strange?

In a climate-controlled environment, birds don't molt on the same schedule as they would outside. Many even seem to molt continuously. This isn't abnormal, just a reaction to living indoors. I have one that seems to molt 3-4 times a year, and three that molt only twice a year.

I discovered by accident last June, a sudden change in temperature and humidity caused Smokey to go into an extreme molt, although the temperature difference between the house and outside was only like 10 degrees or so, but the humidity levels went up by 30+ percent. Most all of them shed some feathers all the time, but the major feathers on Smokey only get swapped about 1 time per year. As BirdBrained stated, a relatively constant temperature and humidity will keep them from molting in a drastic way.

Thanks for the info! It just seemd strage to me, he never did this before--he has always molted approximatley 2x/year. This was in a constant enviormnemt--same place, same temp, relatively constant humidity. I guess his behavior isn't the only thing that has changed since we moved into my apartment. It is a lot less humid in here now than it was in the fall, and even last week--I had to change soap and lotion because my skin was getting so dried out--I guess he is no different. There has also been quite a weather change-- it was 50 some degrees and raining last week and now it is 30 degrees and snowing  .

I have only had Sherwin 11 months but in that time frame he has gone through one heavy molt and has had a few times where he has lost feathers, but not as heavy as a molt. He seems to shed a few here and there all the time.
