I discovered by accident last June, a sudden change in temperature and humidity caused Smokey to go into an extreme molt, although the temperature difference between the house and outside was only like 10 degrees or so, but the humidity levels went up by 30+ percent. Most all of them shed some feathers all the time, but the major feathers on Smokey only get swapped about 1 time per year. As BirdBrained stated, a relatively constant temperature and humidity will keep them from molting in a drastic way.
