Worried about the egg laying now that he is a she...

Postby flemishe on Tue Jan 09, 2007 2:28 pm

I've heard this occurs whether or not there is a male present. I have also heard of some issues with egg binding???
When do they start laying?
Do all females regardless do this?
Are there concerns to have?

Here's a good discussion in a recent thread:

From my limited experience, most female tiels do NOT become chronic egg layers. But it can happen anytime after the hen's first year. Watch her carefully and be sure you always know where you can get good emergency care 24 hrs a day and holidays too. Update your emergency vet care info regularly.

My sister had a tiel that died from egg binding. The bird was just over a year old. I also know of someone who had a female that never laid eggs for years and years and then suddenly it happened, and that bird died from it as well. This was my number one reason for wanting a male. I worry alot over things and getting a male was just one less worry for me!
