Different reactions to different people....

Postby Sherwin's Mom on Mon Jan 08, 2007 2:11 pm

I would love to hear if any of your birds/tiels act differently to different people. Sherwin LOVES my dad. He makes kissing noises when he walks into a room and gives him the big chest and heart wings. He will hop right onto dad's finger without hesitation. Then there's a friend of mine who sets him off the minute she walks through the front door. He screams, shakes his head, opens his beak and attempts to bite her if she gets too close to him. She's never hurt him in any way, nor would she. As I have mentioned in previous posts, he is a rescue and was neglected by his previous owners. It makes me wonder if maybe she strikes a memory in him. He has only been around my dad twice and has always been comfortable around him. He is pretty much even tempered around most people! Has anyone else had this happen with their tiel?

Different People

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Mon Jan 08, 2007 3:39 pm

Casper seems to like everyone so far. Even the vet!! She is just a lovey birdie. But there are times when she will leave me and go over to my husband out of the clear blue sky. She is all comfy and just leaves me. The other day, she was sitting on him and whenever I walked by, she put her wings up like she wanted me to get her. Makes you wonder why they want one person and not the other. Your Dad must have something special that Sherwin just loves!!!

Yah, Bubba acts differently to different people. I am his mommy, and the biggest difference is between me and others. He only calls for me (oddly enough by the word "baby"), he does not call for my boyfriend, my parents, or any of my other friends. He also gives me kisses, not my parents, but sometimes my boyfriend. Oddly enough, he is really afraind of only one of the maintanance men in my building, but not the others. He hates my sister-in-law, he would hide at the back of his cage when she came around and wouldn't let her scratch his head. He really most often flies to me, loves to fly to my mom's head, and will never land on my dad's head, but really likes my dad. He will play fight with me and my boyfriend, but loves most to play fight with my dad, but never my mom... I dunno... he just reacts differently to different people... it's his own wonderful personality :D

I think that your friend may remind your baby of his old mom if he reacts in such an aggressive way. She may look like her (if even in the smallest way), smell like her (even if just her soap), or taste like her.

Jerry Lee is actually nicer to my best friend than to me! On the other hand, he will be really nice to me when I bring other friends and hiss at them. I guess he likes to play people against each other...

My Cockatiel, Mr. Lou, just loves my Son! He has taken care of my birdies when I have been away for a couple days. And when my son does this whistle through his teeth Mr. Lou can copy that whistle EXACTLY! And it only took him one day to learn it. Which seems unfair since I worked for days and weeks to get him to say phrases like "Do You Want Some Water?"....and "Peek-A-Boo" and "Watcha Doing?".

Whenever my Son comes over for a visit as soon as Mr. Lou hears his voice he starts doing what we now call "The Eric Whistle" :D And if I couldn't see either of them I would not be able to tell who was doing the whistling!

My daughters parakeets love my son too...I think he just has a way with birds!

My bird seems to like anybody that comes into the house, in fact, the more people here, the happier he seems! He does treat me and my boyfriend differently though. When we first got woody, I was not living here yet, so he didn't get to see me as often. I moved in with my boyfriend about three months after we got him. He is funny because he really seems to like him better at times----he yells for him more, and waits impatiently for him to come back into the room---BUT he is more scared of him too. He feels more secure with me, epecially when it comes to coming out of the cage. My boyfriend is starting to feel left out here, but I told him------I spend more time with woody and feed him and clean his cage. My bird knows just because I have my hands near him, doesn't neccesarily mean I am going to try to get him out. I spend time whistling back to him and I talk to him all the time. My boyfriend doesn't really do that alot, so birdie knows that when he comes near, it's for a reason and he is afraid of him getting him out of the cage! As afraid as he is though, he still seems to like him, and is happiest when we are BOTH here.

All my kids, with the exception of Chibi, are pretty much my birds. Chibi started out liking to be with me more, but since I added the others, he now prefers to be with my wife. Pixie, the lutino, and the youngest, appears very friendly with our grandkids, but does not particularly like their parents, nor strangers. Smokey will fuss and hiss at anyone else that tries to even talk to him. We've noticed also, that once a person has been in the house a few times, they all seem to not be so wary, but still don't really want to interact with other people. My wife has a Japanese friend that drops by now and then, and she's been around since we just had Smokey and Coco. Nobody will go to her either. Coco, OTOH would go to just about anybody that came in to visit. She was really a laid back personality.

Last evening, I had a late Dr.'s appointment, and I was about 30 minutes later than their normal bedtime. My wife got Ginger and Pixie in the room, but Smokey, Gizmo, Missy and Chibi did not want to go in their cages, and my wife told me they all acted like they were saying "you're not going to tell ME what to do", and 3 of them huddled together on top of the cage, refusing to go in till I got home! Soon as I walked up, they eagerly got in the cage, and I put them to bed. Spoiled brats :-) Wife also said all were looking around, apparently looking for me.

One thing I have noticed is that he likes a calm environment. Too much activity seems to stress him out. During Christmas we all sat in the family room and watched a movie and he loved having everyone around in a calm, relaxed state. He made his rounds visiting everyone! He is pretty good with most people but there is the occasional person that just sets him off. It's funny to see and there's no doubt that they sense things about people that we don't.
