Good Sign?

Postby ockeracres on Sun Jan 07, 2007 10:45 am

I've had Petey for 4 days now. He chirped a little last night and this morning he came over to where I was standing at his cage. (he was still in it). But I was wondering about his one behavior. Whenever I come into the room and go over to talk to him while he is in his cage. He always stretches his wings. Is he trying to make sure his they are ready to carry him away? I have his them clipped.

That's a greeting! He's happy to see you. When you're standing by his cage, do little fast, cheepy whistles, like baby birds in the nest. Most cockatiels seem interested in that sound and come close to hear better.

Welcome to you and Petey. You're off to a good start. And now that you've begun, when you go to find him a companion, buy from a good breeder, and quarantine the new baby at least a month so you don't put Petey's life at risk of disease. Get the new baby to the vet real fast and use that long month of quarantine to forge a tight bond. The two birds will whistle back and forth to each other -- from opposite ends of your home and thru closed doors -- to get to know each other. Then their introduction, when quarantine finally ends, will be eager and happy -- and SAFE!

Ohhhh, that is a GOOD thing! it IS a greeting, and my bird does that EVERY time I go near him! He will pick up one wing and one foot and stretch them together, right?? and about half of the time, when he is done doing that, he will lift up both wings and make the heart shape. See, he likes you already! I always got the feeling that this meant that he is saying-----"hi! happy to see you!" and you will notice more and more that he not only likes you, but he will miss you when you leave, and be SO happy when you come back home!

I swear sometimes Casper will fall off her perch because she gets so excited to have us pick her up. She lifts her wings, picks up her feet, and starts swaying back and forth. It is so funny!

I love when my bird gets all excited, it's like he just can't help himself! can't hold it in! He gets that way alot, especially when it comes to feeding times and millet! but not to get picked up------I doubt he will ever be happy about that, but maybe he will. For now, he likes his cage better, although sometimes it seems like deep down, he wants to come out, but he is scared. I guess once the scared part is gone, he will probably want to be outside his cage. he's really starting to like us now alot, and I am thinking that is just starting to win out over the being scared!

    Excited

I think it might just be a matter of time before you get that same excitement with "pick up". They bond to you so quickly. Patience and time!

Sometimes Casper will be on her cage as I walk by and she lifts her wings like I am going to pick her up. I feel so bad, I have to turn around and get her. I hate to disappoint her, she looks so cotton-pickin' cute!

They are so cute----how could you resist??? I love all the funny things my tiel does-----he will stretch his head WAY up to see me over a perch or whatever is in the way, and I know all his whistles and sounds and I immitate them---sometimes I do them first and he will do them. There are so many different tones in each whistle he does, but he will repeat them exact every time! One time he did one and he left off the ending of it-----waiting for me to finish it---isn't that what WE are supposed to do to get our bird to immitate? He has me trained pretty well!
