How do I know when my tiel is done....laying eggs?

Postby babyluv12 on Fri Jan 05, 2007 2:52 am

She (Baby) is a single female that has laid (for the 1st time) 2 eggs in the last 5 days-I read somewhere that they can lay anywhere from 4-8 eggs-one every 2 days...so far that has been the case but how do I know when she is done- she still has the large "poop" and I read that is a sign that she has eggs but what can I do- She is very very very tame and use to spending a alot of time out of the cage so I feel bad not taking her out as much...She is kinda sitting on the eggs- mostly at night- when I'm here she want to come out....Any tips or advice please? I read so many articles on this but haven't found the answer....Do they lay eggs more than once a year also? :?

You don't say if you have a male also. I will assume not so let her out. No male, not fertile. Not sitting on them all the time, no good anyway. Leave the eggs in the cage until she stops laying and no longer pays attention to them. Then remove. If she breaks any remove that one right away. She could possibly lay 2 or 3 times a year. Extra calcium helps to prevent egg laying problems.
To stop laying, Rearange her cage, give her more nighttime. Cover the cage earlier at night. Move cage to new location. Feed less fresh foods.
They lay when conditions are good to raise the babies. Some people even have to take their tiel to vet to get hormon shots to stop the laying. Good luck with your bird.

Question Darlene?

If she breaks the eggs you say remove it but is the calcium in the shell not good for her ?

Laying Eggs

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Fri Jan 05, 2007 1:29 pm

BabyLuv12 - How old is Baby? I keep reading these posts hoping that Casper won't lay eggs...will wait to see. She is almost 9 months now.

She is by herself- no male to answer the 1st question and to answer the 2nd Baby is aprox 2 yrs old- She laid her 3rd egg today- I have so many pics but I don't know how to post them....She is sitting on them (sometimes) but she is not protective with them when it comes to me-I just want to know some signs that she is done-Scared off her becoming eggbound while I am at work and cannot help her or her becoming a chronic egg layer where she drains her body-She's VERY attatched to me and I don't want her to feel like I am abandoning her since we have had to limit the activities we use to do (go to the grocery store...etc)

I KNOW I SOUND SILLY- but she's my little baby...

No you don't sound silly. We all love our birds or we wouldn't do all that we do for them. Feed her extra calcium (grate cuttlebone) on her food. Rearrange the cage, when things aren't as familiar she might stop laying. More night time (dark). you can watch her vent it will probably puff some as she is getting ready to lay. No one can say how many she might lay at one time. If she isn't worried about sitting on them I would allow out of cage time and being on me or playstand.
Its hard over the internet, you could always take her to the vet and get their opinion.

To Theo streeter, re:broken eggs. I believe eggs should be cooked before giving them to a bird to eat. I would not feed my bird raw eggs. There are plenty of other ways to give a bird calcium.

Babyluv12 - I have a female also about 14 months. She LOVES me, but she want to have my husbands chicks! When she was 11 months old it started with her calling out (don't know who to) for about 2-3 hours a day  Then she would "present" herself to him tail first and then she would go up to him face to face (laying on the couch) and do the cute little squeaky sound. At the time we didn't have a clue about the sound, and I heard it only once. It lasted about 2 months then stopped - YEAH!!

That was the only time she would get affectionate with him up to his face and he loved it. He didn't touch her back area (we were already told about that) and she would do the squeaky sound in the cage! Luckily no eggs yet :D I make it a point to rearrange her cage every 8 weeks or so, change her toys and she get 12 hours of under the cover in her sleep cage.

So, you take her on outings?! That sounds great - what and how do you go about it? Please let us know what you came up with, I'd love to take mine out with me too.

BAck to your egg-layer, leave the cage door open - if she comes out and leaves them, I think it would encourage her to abandon them sooner rather then later.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone- I'm going to rearrange her cage again today-unfortunatly I think she thinks I AM HER MATE...I have 5 budgies also (3 males and 2 females) but they live in their own little world... To answer Bella's question about outings-I started taking her out from the time I got her from the petstore- I went there to buy food for my budgies when I saw her-picked her up and walked with her around the store on my shoulder (I wasn't going to buy her since the funds were low) until they told me they were going to get rid of her since they don't have enough employees to deal with hand fed chicks and the breeder sold her to them anyway! I WAS SOOO MAD! So I bought her-They wanted to put her in this tiny box for budgies and I got mad again and left her on my shoulder and we went and finished my errands that day with her on me...She is SOOOOO well behaved that I just kept taking her out with me (she loves the car,my shoulder, the grocery store...I figured out how to post some pics of all my babies on flickr so I will give everyone the link...

The huge poops should stop when she stops laying. They don't usually go in the nest, they hold it in until they leave the nest area.
My grey doesn't like to go in his cage so every morning he comes out and does an enormous poop!
