Ginger update

Postby chibi-tori on Sun Dec 31, 2006 9:45 am

With fingers still crossed, Ginger has started to gain some weight. She held steady at 84 grams for the last 3 mornings, and this morning, she was up to 85 grams. Her evening weight yesterday was 90 grams, so I'm hoping she'll continue to regain a lot of the weight she lost, but maybe not back to 110 grams at her peak.

All the birdies will get a well-bird exam this Thursday. Should have done it sooner, but better late than never.

I'm very glad to hear that she's gained. Really good news.

Did you make a change in her diet or is she just eating better?

My vet says Luna is a bit low at 92 and would like her te get up to 100-105. He gave me some Lafebers Avi cakes special formula for vets only. She digs right in to it but I think she picks out the seeds and leaves the - well whatever they use to bind it - sticky pellet stuff.

How did the antibiotics work out?

No change in her diet; she has had a staph infection which by now, hopefully, is gone. She's been on meds now for 11 days, and I've all but run out of the drug. Got enough for this evenings meds, but will have to call tomorrow and see if it's been long enough, or get more liquid. Supposed to be on it for 14 days, but whoever mixed the stuff didn't give any extra at all. First batch was only enough for 7 days, dosing twice per day, so had to get them to add more. Still going to run short. Think the gal who did the math did not figure the amount left in the syringe you can't squirt out. I don't like to stop antibiotics till the full course is done, both for me and them.

With this gloomy weather we've had for the last 4 days, nobody is really eating much. I'll be glad when the sun comes back out so the kids can get back to normal. Everybody is like a sore-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs :-)

Glad to hear ginger is doing better-----it's been really gloomy here all day today too, very dark out and my bird has been mostly sleepy all day.

11 days honestly should be long enough, but if you want to err on the side of caution, you can call them back and explain what happened. They'll see how much they dispensed, so they shouldn't be a problem. I usually add 10% to the total amount actually to be dosed, so if some gets spilled or squirted out accidentally, there's still plenty. I'm surprised they were so tight with it, since birds require so little per dose! I hardly ever dispense less than at least an ounce - 30 ccs is way more than is usually required unless it's heavily diluted.

I notice my birds are always pretty subdued after Christmas and New Year's. Even if we don't have a lot of company over, the hustle and bustle in the house, decorations, etc. is enough to heavily stimulate them. My husband gets two weeks off around Christmas every year, and I work a week on and a week off, and they seem to need the break when we go back to work.

I figured 11 days would be long enough too, but according to Dr. Walker, these coag negative bugs can be hard to kill. One of the techs orignally dispensed 2.8 cc's of Baytril, but that was only considering a single dose per day. For bid dosing at 0.2 cc, it would require at least 5.6 cc and neither one account for spills, the amount left in the tip, or a little waste. Think there is enough left for tomorrow morning, and that's it.

We don't bother with Xmas decorations any more, as there is nobody but the two of us, and it's just foolish to mess with all the mess! Our house is so routine, you can set your watch by it, (if I wore one) but this gloomy wx for the last 4 days has taken its toll. Sunshine for tomrrow and next, then back to cloudy/rainy over the following 4 more days. Arghhhh!
