Watchbirds

Postby suby on Fri Dec 29, 2006 8:59 pm

Are your birds really alert and protective? Mine chirp when someone is walking through the halls, and if somebody knocks on the door, they make a lot of noise. They also know the sound of my care or or my car door slamming; once I get out of the car in the parking lot, I already hear them screaming. I'm really glad they're so vocal; anyone would think twice about breaking into the apartment, because my birds would make a lot of racket!

I can assure you, all my kids are more alert and protective than any dog I've ever owned. They hear noises that I can't hear and things that I perceive as completely quiet, they react. For instance.. if I close their bedroom door soon after they go in, there is usually no reaction. Later, when I very slowly open the door (and it makes no noise I can hear at all) when we go to bed, most times somebody will "cheep" or make some sound that they know something has changed, even tho their cage is fully covered. I *know* they either hear the door open, or feel the difference in atmospheric pressure of the door opening. It's way beyond what I could detect. They also know as soon as the car is in the garage, and can hear and react to the garage door opening, even tho it's very quiet. A knock on the back door will cause "skinny bird" for most of them. So, to answer your question, YES, they are the best alert / warning thing short of an IR or Ultrasonic sensor detectors available!

That sounds sooo familiar...

I even had to buy a new phone with a gentler ring because the old one would startle them!

You aren't kidding! Who needs a doorbell? We have our birds, all who have full view of the front porch. They can even hear my husband's car coming from several houses away - far before it's visible! They tell me when my neighbors come home, too!

Believe me, if anybody ever broke into our house, we'd know it! Now, if I can just teach them to talk villians into surrendering! :)

When I was younger, my mom said that Bubba would hear the school bus coming up the street and start calling for me. The same thing happens now... he can hear my foot hit the floor as soon as I get up in the morning and calls for me. What is really funny though, is he barks and growls at people when they come in sometimes... he really is a watch bird! Anyway, they have such sensative hearing, they know when people are around even when you don't!

Yeah, you always know when someone is coming long before you would if it was without a bird in the house. They must have awesome hearing because they seem to hear things we can't. As soon as a car pulls in the driveway, you hear the allert!
