Cockatiel Playground

Postby suby on Thu Dec 28, 2006 5:48 pm

Hi everyone! I'm Suby, and I have to cockatiels, Jerry Lee (male) and Jessie (female). I have a question, and I hope some of you can give me some ideas.

When I let my birds out of the cage, they love to get on the top shelf of my desk right next to it. I've given up trying to put books or anything of importance on that shelf, since they will distroy it; one time, Jerry Lee ate a big hole in my credit card bill!

I decided to make that shelf (about 4 inches deep, 30 inches long) a cockatiel playground, and I'm searching for some ideas. Obviously, I'll put a few old books up there to shred, but what else? Also, what do I use to protect the shelf from their droppings?

I'd appreciate any ideas!

Thank you!

It may not look great but i always put old newspaper down where the guys go on a regular basis. it's easy to change and will protect you'r shelf.

Washable drawer paper would work, as would a washable vinyl wallpaper for a cover. As to what to put up there, why not try some simple things like paper or light cardboard, perhaps a few paper clips, a drinking straw, and any other *safe* item for them to gnaw on. 4" width is not much room, so you might have a problem with them falling off if not full flighted, or flighted to the point where the don't crash. You might fix a ladder from their cage up to the shelf if close enough, and maybe a movable perch for them to sit on.
