Pizzicato likes green vegetables and won't touch orange things like carrots. However, she likes the red and orange pellets best and won't touch the green ones.

What a weird little bird! :)

I'm lactose intolerant, so I can tell you for SURE: Yogurt has no lactose. It is digested by the enzymes that make yogurt yogurt. Hard cheese like cheddar, parmesan, etc. have so little lactose as to make them nearly lactose-free. Softer cheeses like mozzarella have some lactose, so feed in moderation. But soft cheeses like cottage cheese, cream cheese, brie, etc. do still have considerable amounts of lactose and should be avoided.

The real concern with feeding a lot of cheese is both the amount of protein and fat in it. Fat is more of a concern, but too much protein isn't good either.

I don't feed more than about 1/4 ounce in any one day to my CAG, regardless of which cheese it is... though she'd give her tailfeathers for a whole stick of string cheese... lol

Lisa--
Pellet exchange, what a great idea! I just hate throwing out all those nice green pellets knowing there are starving cockatiels out there! :) I'd totally mail them to you!

Food

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Wed Dec 20, 2006 9:28 am

Great info on the lactose. Just ask a lactose intolerant person!!! Thanks.

Pellet exchange, great idea!! We can all start swapping things that are tiels don't like.

A friend told me that she uses the left over food to fill her bird feeders outside. Living in Vegas, we don't have a whole lot of birds flying around, just pigeons! So I don't even have a feeder out. Such a change from New England when I used to have a feeder full of goldfinches right outside my kitchen window. I usually only get a hummingbird in the summer time now.

But I thought that was a great idea, not throwing away but using it for the wildbirds.

I've been feeding the wild birds for some time with the "leftovers", and it does attract birds, but primarily the house wrens and maybe a few suzumi (can't think of the english name). Oddly enough, I put some store bought food in the feeders the other day, and within a few hours, I had birds I've never seen before, as well as some of the "regulars". It's been like spring here this week, which does cause weird things to happen...
