Full spectrum lighting

Postby Martha on Wed Dec 13, 2006 10:03 pm

Hi, is it okay to keep a full spectrum light on the birds all day, every day?
My tiel has a FeatherBrite light over his cage and my lovebird does too. It won't hurt to have it on all the time will it?
I was reading some of the comments about pellets and seeds. My tiel, Kinta is just so weird about food. I'm still working on a pellet diet. He gets Vita Sun seed mix (I pick out the sunflower seeds!) Zupreem fruit, Zupreem Garden Goodness, a bit of Kaytee Exact, Roudybush crumbles. Then, for noontime, either birdy bread, or lima beans, peas, corn. He loves broccoli and the other vegies, loves the birdy bread, and of course, the seed. When he is out with me, I get some Zupreem pellets in my hand and he eats them like a snack.
My vet is strictly a pellet advocate with fresh vegies and fruit, so I'm trying hard to get him converted, but it looks as though this is going to take a while.
He's just so spoiled!!!!

    Martha,

I think the consensus of most vets is that birds still need some seeds and not a completed diet of pellets alone. It sounds like you are doing well with your diet for them. I wish mine would eat more veggies, but kale is about all they will eat except for Chibi. He'll eat almost anything.

I'm trying my best! He's 5 months old now, and just so silly! I'm going to enjoy him at this age because when he becomes a teenager in a few months, it might be a bit different!!!!
Kinta is an aboriginie word for 'laughter'. His name fits him to a tee.
He's fearless most of the time and his vocabulary is growing every day.
My lovebird, Carl, (whom I suspect is a Carol!) is in love with him, but Kinta could care less about him.
They are both such joys to have! I cherish every day with them and the greetings I receive when I walk through the door after work.
