Attachments to Other Animals?

Postby Sherwin's Mom on Wed Dec 13, 2006 10:56 am

I have a 19 year old cat who, due to her age, could really care less about anything other than eating or sleeping! Lately, Sherwin has seemed to take a liking to her and I don't know what to make of it. If he sees her coming down the stairs he sticks his chest out and does the "heart wings" thing and the other day he waddled over to her while she was sleeping. I intercepted him, but it was apparent that he wanted to be right by her side. She's old and deaf and a very gently cat who has never attempted any harm. Is it possible for birds to see other animals as members of their family....so to speak?

Thats an easy anser Noel yes. Most domestic animals once they have been togeter for some period of time will get used to each other. You have to remeber in the wild these animals would be prey and preditor but domesticated are from the fact they lose a lot of there naturl instincts. It's why a lot of pets would not survive if released into the wild.

Kitty

Wow, Noel, that is one cat who has been around for while. Ours only lived until about 12 or so. That sounds so cute that Sherwin is interested in your cat. Do you ever see those pictures of deer and rabbits or cows and deer? Strange combinations, but it happens.

I think you should let that relationship grow. But of course, cat and bird...there is always a bad situation waiting to happen. But if you are supervising it at all times, I don't see that you should discourage it. How has the cat reacted to Sherwin?

Nikki is great with him....very tolerant. I think in a strange way she welcomes the company. They are the closest in proximity when Nikki is curled up on my lap and Sherwin perches on my knee.......typically we are watching TV. They are totally fine together and occasionally Sherwin will crawl over Nikki to get to my shoulder or back to his cage. It's as if he has no fear of her at all. So funny to see. Oh - and if I'm petting the cat, his little butt wants attention too.....he acts jealous!!

Well, sounds like they are buddies. Have you gotten pictures? Make sure you take some. That will be so great to look at in years to come.

And yes, I know what it is like to have a jealous bird. Casper hates it when I talk to the lovebirds or the hamsters!

I do have a picture of the both of them sitting on the arm of the couch, looking out the window. It's really cute.

It is on my cell phone. I need to get a cable in order to transfer the pictures to the computer!
