New Bird Owner, 9Yr Old Bird--MAKING PROGRESS

Postby speaktomi on Sun Dec 10, 2006 10:52 pm

Well, I've been able to spend more time with Daisy lately and am really trying to positive-reinforce my hand. She's perched on my shoulder now, grinding her beak :) :D I'm so glad I know about that "pleasure" sound.

She's still not all that fond of being handled and really never was since I adopted her. If she spent her first 9 years simply being carried on a shoulder, sitting on a person's chest, or in her cage, do you think it's possible to "convert" her to like handling or do I just need to accept that she's not a cuddler? I was really hoping for a cuddler

Since she was so old when I got her, I'm not really getting the total "bird experience" am I?

I'm now contemplating getting a 2nd bird, but not another tiel. Thinking a Meyer or a MaxPi, a baby, that I can hand-raise (tho the idea scares me cuz I've never done that) or that I can at least get very young. I have interacted with the Meyer's a few times at Petland and they are so awesome! Not to mention absolutely beautiful. Mellow, beautiful, they love interacting with people, etc.

I wouldn't buy from a pet shop, but it's a nice place to interact with (some of them). Anyone got one?

Sheri :P

Some birds never want to be pet or cuddled. Just the way they are. If you're new to birds give it a little time before getting a second. No assurancethe 2 would be friendly to each other. Means twice the time you need to spend to feed water and play with them.
If you do get a baby please buy a weaned baby preferably from a good breeder. You do not have wean a baby for it to bond to you. My hahns was 7 months old when I got him and he is very bonded to me. (He's 8 years old now). My grey bonded to my daughter, since she moved out on her own he has now become more bonded to me. Lots of people get older birds that bond to them.
