I also got my cockatiel at Petco. I was somewhat impressed with how well cared for the birds were-----there was always somebody going in their room cleaning or taking a bird out of the cage to be checked out if it was missing feathers. Petco was not able to give me much info though on my bird, like the day he was hatched, and only could tell me that he came from california and that he was under a year. Also I have never seen anyone from any Petco I was in that ever handle any of their birds any other way but to grab them out with a towel, and the Petco I used to live near in NY state had all five of their cockatiels in one cage! the one where I purchased my bird had only two to a cage. I went to their website and complained about that Petco, and went back a month later and the birds were separated and things seemed better, although all the times I had ever gone there(I worked accross the street so I visited the birds often on lunch break) I never saw an employee ever go into the bird room, and in the other Petco there were always employees going in there with the birds. In my opinion, Petco is so-so. They said my bird was hand raised, but how do I know when no info is given about my bird and he is scared to death of coming out his cage still six months later. I haven't given up and we still take him out and he doesn't do too bad, he will come around, but geez, does it seem odd to you that he is so tough to tame and hand fed? It's ok, I am not complaining, we actually have fun with him when we take him out and once in a while I don't think he minds it too much once he is out a while and gets used to it, and I am pretty patient. I did decide though that when the time is right to get another cockatiel, which I plan to do after my work is done getting woody tame, I am not going to get one from Petco. I plan on adopting a cockatiel from a woman here in mass who is a foster mom to I think 17 birds------plus she has three or four of her own!
