Have cockatiel, will travel?

Postby flutefish on Fri Dec 01, 2006 9:13 pm

I'll be heading to my parents' home for about a week at Christmastime, and I'm wondering whether I should take Pizzicato. My parents are all for her coming, and my normal bird-sitter will be out of town also, so I'd love to take her, but I'm worried about the drive, which is 10 hours each way.

Pizz has been on short drives around town and done just fine, but that's a long time for her to be in her little carrier, and my car is too small for her to stay in her normal cage. Has anyone taken their fid on a lengthy road trip? I'd appreciate any advice.

I've taken all of my birds on car trips that last 8+ hours. As long as they are comfortable, have food and water, they are fine.

I have finches, 3 cockatiels, and an Indian Ringneck Parakeet.

I've had good luck traveling with a couple of mine. I take a cage for when I need to get out, but while driving, I just let them sit on my shoulder. They seem to really enjoy it, and one just went to sleep.

I take my birds on trips. The longest has been 12 hours to Maine. Always secure your bird in a small travel cage. In the case of an accident, you don't want your bird flying off or getting slammed into a window.
Provide some food and fruit (oranges or grapes) for liquid. A low perch in the cage. Make some stops for your bird to have a rest and be able to eat while not bouncing around. I ususally cover part of the cage to block out lights and trees going by.
For winter travel, make sure you have a heavy blanket to cover the cage in case of breakdown on the road.
I have 3 budgies, a senegal, hahns and CAG that travel with me.
Have a nice trip!!

Casper did great on a 5 hour drive over Thanksgiving. We had her big cage in the back seat. She stayed in it part of the time and part of the time on my shoulder. She sleeps most of the time. Plays with some toys occasionally. But she does great. Plus, I got to enjoy her for the 5 days! I am so glad we took her along.
