Thanksgiving Pain in the Butt!

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Sun Nov 26, 2006 10:14 pm

Well, we took Casper to the in-laws for the long weekend! She did great on the 5 hour drive up there. She was so happy to get non-stop love and attention for 5 days. Spoiled bird.

She had to be on someone at all times...what's new?

She tried some new foods (gramma is a great cook!) She loves pancakes (plain of course, no syrup or butter), tried celery for the first time and liked it, and plain french toast. She is getting more adventurous with food now.

Anyone try anything new that you would just never think your tiel would eat?

If you haven't already, you should read the post about parrots and Thanksgiving....it is hilarious! You should check out some of the recipes online for birdie bread.....they love it!! Plus you can add what you want to tailor it to your bird. Sherwin loves the bread slightly heated in the microwave so it's not cold. Sounds like you guys had a gerat holiday. :)

I will check out the parrot talk over there!
I did try some birdie bread. She likes it. I was able to put everything but the kitchen sink in there! Sneaky way to get her to eat her veggies!
That's what I do, throw them in the micro for a few seconds.

Another trick I use is to buy the little jars of organic baby food and add them to the mix. They have all diferent kinds! Sherwin now gets excited when he hears the microwave....he thinks that everything that goes in the microwave is for him! :D

    Food

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Wed Nov 29, 2006 1:54 pm

Oooh, I did hear about baby foods. She might like that because she is not into "big" foods. I have to cut her stuff up really small.

Casper sees my hubby sit on the couch with his popcorn bowl and she starts to get all excited. She paces back and forth, expecting some!

    Hi Sherwin...love Casper!

    Hi Casper!

Postby Sherwin's Mom on Wed Nov 29, 2006 2:16 pm

I know....wait until she gets really bold and wants to eat out of your mouth! They get so impatient and just crawl right up there!

According to the vet, Mr Sherwin is a tad bit hormonal right now......I didn't know males had that issue. I thought it was a female thing. I had hormonal problems with Buddie....all the time, so I'm used to it. Did you know that males exhibit nesting behavior? He has had a field day with all of the Christmas bags......and I have been told I need to remove them. Haha

Anyway - the baby food trick is what I used on Buddie...she was not a good veggie eater but loved the bread which had all kinds of pureed veggies in it! Little did she know.

Well, goodness, I just can't wait until she tries to get into my mouth!!!
As it is, if I try to eat something while she is on my chest, she puts her face right in front of it. Not that she really likes it, but just curious to see what it is!
Gosh, I love that bird!!! :D

Buddie was ALWAYS curious about what I was eating. She used to peck my cheek while I was chewing....Sherwin gets right up to my mouth and just stares. It cracks me up when he does that. I could give him his own little plate of food and he has to see what I'm eating.

I have trouble getting my bird to eat his fruit and veggies too, but he LOVES bread! Its a good way to sneak it into his diet, plus the baby food is organic with nothing added, it's all good, and he loves it!

So you do the baby food thing too!! Great! There are so many things you can add.....cooked brown rice...oats......etc. We should all try to take pictures of our fids after they have eaten and have all kinds of food stuck to their beaks!! :D

    What kind?

Postby Sherwin's Mom on Thu Nov 30, 2006 2:15 pm

What kind of popcorn do you give Casper? I'm afraid to give mine any type of microwave popcorn because of the salt and oils. Do you know of one that's OK for birds?

    Popcorn

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Thu Nov 30, 2006 3:12 pm

I just give her the lite microwave store brand. I think it is even from Walmart. I don't give it to her often, so I don't worry too much about it. She doesn't eat any other "snack food" so I don't fret too much about the content of that.

I know people give their birds saltines, triscuits, etc. I don't, so I figure a little salt won't be that bad.

I have heard that people do air popped, but that is too much work for me!

    Lisa,

I'd be careful about even the "lite" popcorn, as even it contains high levels of sodium (salt), and as you probably know, 'tiels can not get rid of salt. Yes, there are some foods with salt in them (pellets) and every living thing needs a little salt of some kind, but I think if it were me, I'd not go the microwave type. It's not that much trouble to pop some plain popcorn in a teaspoon of vegetable oil and leave it unsalted / un-buttered. Mine had a big bowl full this afternoon.
Hi, my name is Sam, and I'm a 'tiel addict !
