Fun with wood!

Postby chibi-tori on Tue Nov 21, 2006 5:03 pm

Put a few more pictures of the kids up just now. Think they enjoyed themselves this afternoon too.

Enjoy......

How cute!!! Who are the two in the popcorn bowl? I love normal grays and your little dark one looks darker and fluffier than my three. What happened to the tail? The yellow one in the bowl is beautiful. What's that kind called? Did you see the parents? I give mine lots of cute branches and they DO love chewing them up :D

    Thank you, Paca

That would be Chibi and Ginger in the popcorn bowl. Chibi broke all his tail feathers because he was clipped way too short, and when he flaps his wings, he goes backwards and lands on his tail. It does not seem to bother him, but it will definitely cause him problems if his flight feathers grow in before his tail feathers regrow. I blame the breeder for his haphazard wing clips. Chibi is molting to some extent now, and has replaced a lot of his "chick feathers" with more permanent ones, which are a good bit more coarse than the first ones. Chibi is also getting very dark compared to when he was 8 weeks old. My wife told me this morning, she was looking at his back feathers in the sun, and she says they are a very dark brown. Still looks gray to me :D Ginger is not a cinnamon, and I really don't know what you'd call her. The breeder has 100 pair of breeding birds in an outdoor aviary, and he can't keep up with who does what, so parentage is most likely, totally unknown.

Give a fid a stick of balsa, and they will destroy it in just a matter of a few minutes, but they sure have fun doing it. Trying to save the door frame around my patio door!

I'll be posting more pictures as I take them.. I never tire of catching their antics and poses. Dont'cha just love 'em!

I just realized the picture labeled Chibi-tori is not Chibi. That is Ginger. Did not look good enough at coloring. I'll get a good single of Chibi tomorrow and post.

What a hoot. Mine have not been nearly as nice to their play gym--the ladder has....shall we say character? They are somewhat amused by hamster chew blocks; maybe I should just stop at the lumber yard & buy them some balsa -- good idea. When I first got the tiels they were on seed only and would go through a 36" perch every 5-10 days. Guess the other 20 odd fids and lots of foods are more amusing than their old home, cuz they haven't chewed all the way through a perch in ..... wait, I don't want to tempt the fates by finishing that sentence. Your fids are adorable!

Look at all of your babies!! I'll bet there's never a dull moment at your house!! I should see if mine is into chewing wood! Right now he's into shredding toilet paper.

Yep.. they could make pretty good feathered saws, for sure. Pine does not stand up too well, but balsa is really just for fun. Catschair, you can find balsa at the local hobby shop, or sometimes craft stores. Doubt the lumber yard has any.

There isn't a shred of paper or cardboard they haven't gotten in to! We had to stop leaving any important papers anywhere they could get to them. It just amazed me how long they can entertain themselves with something as simple as a piece of thin cardboard, or a postcard type stuff. They each will bite off a chunk, chew it for a bit, then swap it with another -- really "swapping spit" :D

Don't know about y'all, but all those expensive toys are a waste of money. Mine like simple stuff, like the paper, a discarded tail or flight feather, drinking straws, my wife's hair roller pins, bead chain, and for really good chewing exercise, a piece of semi-hard plastic tubing about 2" long. The only problem I have, is *EVERYBODY* wants to eat on my eyeglasses. I just got new lenses about a month ago, and I now have beak point marks around the edges of the new lenses! I never thought they could dent polycarbonate with anti-scratch coating, but they did. About the only thing I can do is remove them, but then, I can't see too well... the word "NO" only makes them want to get to the glasses that much more.

Boy, do I know that feeling. My IRN starts out sitting nicely on my shoulder, starts chewing on the earrings (and is not too careful about the attached ear), and just when I go protect them, she joyfully latches on to the eyeglasses. The laptop keyboard is another great temptation..... it just has to stay closed up!
