New member saying HELLO!

Postby Sherwin's Mom on Wed Nov 15, 2006 1:04 pm

Hello to everyone in the forum. I'm a new member and a fellow bird lover. I recently started a blog about my recently adopted cockatiel, Sherwin, and welcome anyone to read his stories and add their own! Sherwin's story is a fun one to tell.....he was neglected by his previous owners and was rarely, if ever, allowed out of his cage. Everything is new to him and it has been such a joy to witness the way he has embraced his new life, not to mention it makes me feel pretty good being able to provide a fun and safe environment for him! Just saying hello

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Wed Nov 15, 2006 1:24 pm

Hi Sherwin's Mom - He is absolutely adorable. What a lucky bird to get a Mom who loves him and takes such good care of him. Nice success story. I hope you are proud of the fact that he will now have a great home with someone to treasure him!

Welcome to the forum, I love it!!!

Thanks!

Postby Sherwin's Mom on Wed Nov 15, 2006 1:33 pm

Oh - thanks so much for the kind words! Yes - he has been such a joy and it's been so much fun watching him adapt to the new home and to his new freedom. When I first brought him home he was so weak he could barely walk and now I can barely catch him. I keep his wings clipped but boy can he scoot along the floor, table, wherever he is at the time! I tell ya....sometimes animals can be so much like kids. If he knows I'm coming to put him back in his cage he will run and hide....no kidding. I could go on and on but will save that for the blog. Have a fantastic day!

Hello

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Wed Nov 15, 2006 1:52 pm

I see you viewed my little Casper's pic. We are very new tiel owners, but I will never be without one. Don't know what I would do with myself!! :)

I will check back on your site to hear about Sherwin's progress. I laughed so hard when you wrote that he runs and hides when you try to get him!!

Love our birds...

Postby Sherwin's Mom on Wed Nov 15, 2006 2:05 pm

You know - I have always had an animal whether it be a dog, cat, horse or rabbit but there is something about birds. I can't put my finger on it but they are so darn lovable. Not that cats and dogs aren't....it's just different. They have these huge personalities packed into a little body and I guess you don't see that until you own one.

So nice....

Postby Sherwin's Mom on Wed Nov 15, 2006 2:45 pm

Thank you! I will be sure to tell him how handsome he is! When you adopt an abused or neglected animal, do you think they instictively know when they are in a good home? He was in such poor shape when I got him but it didn't take him long to settle right in. He knows he has the run of the house (supervised of course) and he takes full advantage. Do you have any adopted babies?

Adoption

Postby HarpSpirit on Wed Nov 15, 2006 2:58 pm

I did not adopt my Fids....I went to a small Local pet store and THEY adopted me!

I have heard so many times when somebody takes in an abused or unwanted bird that they just transform once they are in a loving home....I feel most animals will respond to kindness.

And some fresh veggies and lots of scritches doesn't hurt either.

Hi Sherwins mom!

Your blog is good.. I enjoy reading about anyone taking in a neglected animal, but birds are in my heart too.. Our first pair were neglected, but not nearly to the point as Sherwin. I know the pain of losing a bird.. I'm still not completely over the loss of Coco. I was hesisitant to add birds because of that, but Smokey was so lonely, I wanted to try to find some companion for him. Think I've finally succeded in finding a female that he likes, but there is competition for her with another male, who was her cagemate at the breeder. I'm sure he's happier now with something and somebody to look forward to a relationship with.

I am a true believer in adoption.....all of my animals past and present have been adopted from shelters or rescues. I adopted my cat back in 1987 and she's still living a good life!! Watching Sherwin embrace his new life and new environment has been such a treat for me and it's something that I love to share with people. I will be adding new stories a few times a week so feel free to come back and read more or add some of your own stories as comments! Animals are so innocent and totally dependents on us for their well being, it's incomprehensible for me to think that there are so many people out there who abuse animals. Have a wonderful day!!

Cheerios

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Fri Nov 17, 2006 9:38 am

Noel - He is the cutest thing ever! He looks so happy and healthy! I really wish Casper was more vocal, but that is what you get with a female!! Casper loves Cheerios too.

GREAT VIDEO!!! Thanks for sharing!

Speaking of video clips.... Before Coco passed away, I had made this video of her. I think it will crack a smile, if nothing else. It's kind of a tribute to her pranks. I'd started fixing my breakfast, and she discovered it.. I won't spoil the video, but let it tell the story. You'll hear my wife talking to Smokey in the background, but Coco is the star of the film!

Enjoy.....
