Female tiel with 2 eggs in her and struggling

Postby ccz on Sun Jul 24, 2011 9:36 pm

I have a female tiel 16 yo. who is not feeling well. I took her to the vet and it was determined she has 2 eggs in her, once of which is the lower one and has not calcified fully yet. The dr gave her calcium, fluids and vitamins. She recommend she stay in a dark, warm, moist environment. I have her cage covered and it am keeping her in a quiet dark room. The vet says the eggs are smaller than a full size egg for a tiel. She has laid smaller than normal eggs before. The dr suggested giving her oxytocin but I read it is not usually effective. So I brought her home and plan to give her more calcium in the morning.

Has anyone had experience with a tiel laying 2 eggs at once?

Has anyone had any success with giving the bird calcium?

Does anyone have any recommendations at this time?

Thank you for your help.

Goodness, this is scary. You sound very calm tho and that's what she needs to feel from you. Do you have a humidifier to run close to her cage? Or maybe set her cage in the bathroom and fill the room with steam as often as you can. I've never had one with 2 eggs known to be forming simultaneously. I feed my flock a lot of high-calcium greens and have never had calcium problems, but certainly increasing her calcium now would be good. Once this crisis is past, if you'd like to talk about ways to discourage her from making more eggs, just nod. Wishing her and you all the best.

Yes, best of luck and success in helping those 2 eggs to pass without any problems. Hopefully an operation will not be needed.

You did not say whether this is an avian vet or not? I assume she is though and I assume the calcium is the right kind.

Curious if your bird has daily or as often as possible exposure to direct natural sunshine (not thru window glass)? Also curious if your female Tiel is fully flighted or not?

I have heard of a macaw that formed *several* small eggs without laying them. She ended up requiring surgery to remove the eggs and, if I recall right, a spay procedure to stop her from laying any more eggs.

Likewise, I have also heard of a budgie and another small bird (tiel? lovebird?) that produced 1 egg that they didn't lay, and the birds did not become egg-bound. These two birds lived with the egg inside them for 6 months or longer, where-in the eggs became completely calcified.

Best of luck with your hen!

Yes she does get alot of sunlight thru all of the windows in my house. No, I have clipped her wings. And the first ER vet I did ask her if she was an avian vet and she indicated she was. The second ER vet which took the next shift was not but did handle birds in her practice. I did take her home last night and she did eat at 1a and again this morning. I gave her the calcium the dr told me to give her every 12 hrs. She is acting somewhat normal which I am cautious about. Good thing I work from home.

Thanks for your comment. If you have any other thoughts, please let me know.

As I already mentioned, sunlight thru window glass is NOT adequate for any bird = they need direct natural sunshine. And you should NOT be clipping her wings. Those two reasons alone are probably (IMO & IME) why your bird is having problems now.

I also would find (asap) a private practice, well qualified, long standing, avian vet if I were in your shoes - even if you have to drive a couple/few hrs. to get to one.

Best of luck to your bird. I hope you do all that is needed to be done to solve the current problem and I hope you do what is needed to be done to keep it from happening again.

So glad she's eaten and made it through the night. Still very scary. Any hope of finding a humidifier today?

I have a large 'tiel flock that gets little direct sunlight but has full-spectrum lights over their flight cage and a very good diet. Eight of mine are the same age as your girl, and there's been lotsa noisy love-making, but very few eggs, thank goodness. Their lights are on for 12 hrs, and then off 12. They've lived in the 13x6' flight since 2001. Before that they were breeder birds in smaller cages, so not much flight time. Many make full use of the large cage, flying laps and circles often. Others fly only when startled to flock flights of short distances. Many birds who aren't flighted in their early years simply never learn to make use of that option that seems so very natural when a bird is fully feathered. But the muscles developed by flying are also used to lay eggs, so birds who fly should have an easier time laying eggs.

If you'd like some help finding a good avian vet, we might be able to help if you tell us what city is closest to you.

Hoping hard for your girl to recover.

To expand on F8's response, windows can filter out the beneficial part of the sun's rays. 1 hour of exposure to direct (or even indirect light) is probably more beneficial to a bird than all day spent in front of a sunny window. Direct sunlight helps birds to create vitamin D, which in turn helps to synthesize calcium. If a bird is not receiving enough vitamin D, then they can become deficient in calcium.

You can learn more about that here
CALCIUM, PHOSPHORUS & VITAMIN D3 IN YOUR BIRD'S DIET

As for flight, well is believed (if not proven) that flight has a great amount to do with the muscles that help move eggs along the reproductive tract. Not surprising then that hens who are in shape may have a better chance of laying eggs without difficulties than those who are out of shape. I can't seem to find the article that talked about this, unfortunately.

So you might want to consider allowing your hen to be flighted for her health and safety, as well as investing in a cage that you can take her outside in for 30 minutes or so per day - or a few times a week. Otherwise, invest in full spectrum lighting.

Is your bird eating and pooping normally? is she hunched over? Sometimes birds reabsorb developing eggs.
Fresh baby (one of my lutinos) was egg-bound. She was hunched over and was straining to push the egg out. I couldn't stand to see her suffering anymore and rushed her to the vet. the vet extracted the egg and gave her some pain meds and anti-botics to prevent infection. She's never laid an egg again. It was odd.
