Mother has plucked a few feathers off the babies!!

Postby Kennyboy5150 on Thu Apr 21, 2011 3:18 pm

Went to check on the family this morning and noticed tiny feathers in the bottom of the nestbox!! Looks like mom had plucked a few feathers off the wings. She's been kinda plucking dad too during preening sessions. I took her out and put her in the other cage. Will the plucked feathers grow back and can dad handle the feeding of the 3 babies? They are now 2 1/2 weeks old. We have baby formula, should we take over the everyday feedings? Any help or suggestions? Thanks guys!!

If you aren't doing it already, weigh the chicks daily, at the same time each day to make sure they are still gaining weight. A kitchen gram scale will work fine. If you notice they aren't gaining or start loosing weight, I would supplimental feed, but still allow dad to do some of the work. He should do fine though.

Good job in removing the hen. She will continue to pluck, and will do so with any babies she has, so make sure not to let her breed again.

The plucked feathers will grow back, just give them time.

Mom & dad started doing that at age 4 weeks to my lutino babies (not grey babies) I had to remove babies and hand feed. It's a pain but i had no choice becaseu the parents were getting more & more aggressive towards babies.
