My vet siad it "could" be veggies that aren't washed properly that "may" be a problem.
I really don't know.
I like to think I wash my greens pretty well with the veggie wash.
They love the greens too!
Like I've mentioned earlier, Eddie has this weird habit of biting at my fingernails. It wouldn't surprise me if that was indeed the culprit too. She is the only bird that tries to pull my fingernails off. It's odd.

Cockatiel breeding came to an end in my aviary after a deadly outbreak of megabacteria (now known as avian gastric yeast) in '96, when it was all but unknown in this country. Just 30 months later, I lost another 'tiel to TB. Both diseases were hardly known then compared to today. With good vets advising me, I wracked my brain and chased down MANY ideas on what might have killed my birds. It was harrowing and depressing. We know today that both diseases are caused by "germs" that are around us all the time, that a bird's weakened immune system is all it takes for the opportunistic illness to grab hold. Try to be gentle with yourself. If it were your cleanliness and care, Eddie wouldn't likely be the only one sick, would she?

Yikes.. sorry to hear about all of your loss! :(
hmm..Eddie is in egg laying mode. Another thing she does that just Button does is bite my mouth. I try to keep them away from my face because of this. If I fall asleep on the couch and they are out and about they will "investigate" and see if I have any food on me. (Cheeky brats!) I know the human mouth is a toilet (in spite of my diligant dental care). I really don't know why Eddie and Button go for my mouth.
Eddie seems to be OK now. No regurging. She is just about finished with her meds.

Thanks for that site! I hadn't come across that one, but did on another one, and it turns out that there's 4 in the area (besides the other ones I found) that can watch over the birds. I've only been able to get in contact with one, and she said she charges $25 a visit. Another answered, but nobody was there... One pet sitter is in the ICU, so no answer from her, either! But I hope she feels better shortly! The store charged me $16 a day for all of my birds, or it would have been $8 a day if I could have put them all in one cage. The price for boarding them was around $672? Everyone else I had found was charging $20 or more a day, which would have resulted in over $800... at $25 a day, that's over $1,000. Working part time, that's unfortunately more than I can afford!

I just hope that next time (if ever a time comes) that I must pay someone to watch over my birds that I wont be gone for nearly as long, so I can afford the higher priced pet sitters!

BE, I lost a budgie to megabacteria. I didn't find out until after his death, unfortunately, even though he had tests, among them being fecal and crop gram stains - no bacteria or fungal infections were found. None of the other birds have tested positive for megabacteria/AGY, nor have I lost any birds since this incident, which occurred 2 years ago. I suspect that he might have gotten AGY due to the first vet that saw him, and perhaps didn't do any tests to determine why he was sick. He was prescribed an antibacterial med which may have led to the AGY, unless he had that prior to the meds and was misdiagnosed all along. I've since switched vets, but do feel like an idiot for having used the first one for as long as I did.

BB, I'm glad to hear that Eddie is doing better! Unfortunately, my two didn't receive the 'all clear' so they are still on meds... and I've also added ACV to their water, which I'm hoping is not over-kill (although I feel as if it is). Both bourke and Kiwi appear bright eyed and fine, but their fecals say otherwise!

I like to think I clean my house and birds clean but I guess I have to be a bit MORE diligent.
A former vet I used to go to (he is too far for me to go to now but I liked him) swears by ACV.
It seems that everyone's poops look better too since I prophylactically put everyone on ACV while Eddie had her meds.

I keep forgetting to ask what my a-vet suggestions for cleaning, as I have heard of some commercial type bird safe cleaners. I typically just use bleach, vinegar or soap and hot water, depending on what I'm cleaning and how thoroughly I'm cleaning.

How much ACV are you using in the water?

I use appx a teas organic ACV with a quart of water. Enough to have that "smell' but with no real offensive taste.
Eddie's poops look perfect. No regurg.
Generally I use anti-bacterial dish soap to wash dishes ect..
When I wash the perches -especially the cloth perches I use "poop off" which is specially made for cleaning bird poop off of things (you can get it at Drsfostersmith.com )
I double filter our tap water. (PUR water filter at faucet then I put it through a brita water container) I found that bottled water has a plastic smell and taste.

Monica, you can safely use undiluted acv if necessary, will not harm the birds at all :)
