Eating alot.....

Postby DMC on Fri Oct 01, 2010 7:15 pm

Hello,
I've had my Tiel Meeklo for 11 months now, he is a year and 8 months old. To me it seems like he eats alot! He's usually at it with his treat seed bar then back down to his food bowl, he's either doing one or the other. I let him out but he usually just perches on the chair and sticks to one place. Today I took him to get groomed and had him weighed, when I got him back in November 2009 he was 102g, now he's 114g. Is that normal? That's pretty much what I wanted to know...thanks for reading my post!
I've also included a before and after photo for him.....

Since he was 9 mos when you brought him home, he was already pretty much a mature bird. So, that's a significant wgt gain. First, I wonder if he's been DNA sexed? If not, that might be a good thing to do.

But eating from boredom is what kills so many captive birds. They become obese and die very prematurely. I try to keep food very lean -- low calorie -- and limit quantity. Your term "seed treat" sounds like "candy" to me. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions ... Do you feed him raw greens? Mine love theirs! And I give them lots of clipped branches with leaves and seed pods, etc, to play with, like birds! Gotta be sure the branches are bird safe, but we can help you with that if you're unsure.

Since you had him groomed, I'm guessing he's not flighted. Have you given that decision good consideration? Is it the best way to keep him safe in your home? Flying is great exercise.

This is brief b/c I'm having a busy evening, but if you want to chat more about any of this, just say so. Very glad you're asking such good qxs :)

DMC what a stunning bird :D
Sounds like a big boofhead bird to me at that weight wow
Yeah perhaps a bit less food wouldn't do him harm
Rotate his toys around regularly and also perhaps the positioning of the branches/perches in his cage so he doesn't get bored.
Lots of branches like Blues suggested for shredding etc

Hi Sorry this is going to be very breif (I have 2 funerals today :( )
Meek is a beautiful bird . He looks like my Noodle ....:D
With this being said Noodle's weight increased just before she started to lay eggs (this will be another post later as time permits )
I have a feeling that your bappie is a girl , if you have access to a black light you can shine it on the under side of her tail , you should see barring , this is an indication tho not 100% like dna that it is a girl .. We did this with Noodle and saw the barring . So we surmised she was in fact a she ... agian sorry so breif ...

I'm still waiting to see an albino under a black light.... as I can't say how well it would work on one of these guys. I know it would work well on a non-pied lutino, but an albino is another story completely, so the results could very well be different.
