Trouble at my apartment...HELP!

Postby DMC on Sat Aug 21, 2010 6:26 pm

Hello all!
I have had my Meeklo (albino tiel) for the past 9 months. Since I got him I always put him outside on the balcony and he really enjoys his time out there. Well within the past month someone has been putting in complaints against his chirping (he doesn't scream like a parrot, just whistles tunes) saying it keeps them up. So I've been putting him out in the late afternoon, around 5 or 6 in the evening, I got my second warning from the apartment manager today, which I'm very upset about because I have been keeping him inside, I take him out when I cook because I have teflon. They said if I get another warning their giving me 10 days to get rid of him! I don't know what to do or if I have any rights in this situation. I DO NOT want to give him away, that's my little boy. So I'm wondering if you guys have any suggestions? Either with experience with this type of situation or any non-toxic pans that I can cook with?
I feel like I'm comprimising his quality of life having him inside all day, he's always quiet when he's indoors and looks a little moody and morose, as soon as I put him outside he starts singing his heart away. Any feedback would be helpful, thank you!

Not a problem, really. Your bird will do fine inside if you get safe cookware and feed him healthy food. Here's a search link to lotsa threads in which we've discussed safe cookware options: search.php?keywords=teflon&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sr=posts&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search If you'd like to chat about a healthy 'tiel diet, just nod.

Sorry you had such a scare, but glad it's an easy-remedy problem.

Oh boy, people complaining about a natural sound such as a bird whistling   some people really should get a life!
I could understand it if it was a noisy cockatoo or conure or something but gee, a tiel

I have a better solution, move apartments  kidding of course that is not the solution but perhaps you could find out who is making the complaints?
If this person is a shift worker and sleeps during the hours you would potentially have your bird out, perhaps (s)he and you could come to some kind of agreement at what times you can put your bird out?

Some people are miserable *&^%$! However, I do agree with Claudia's approach of talking to the complainer. It is worth a try. :)

Personally, I would move, but I know that's not always an option in hard times. I just feel that complaints about your bird's noise must be an excuse. Can't see how a 'tiel could be that bothersome. So if you keep the bird inside, the complainer will find something else to gripe about.

Regardless whether you talk with the neighbor and mgmt or move, you NEED cookware that's not poisonous. The danger isn't JUST while you're cooking. The fumes linger in the air until the air is completely recirculated, which can take awhile. You've been lucky. A 10-piece stainless steel set is only about $75, much too cheap to risk this danger.

This is really a shame......my cockatiels also love going outside! As soon as I put them in their outdoor cage, Woody starts singing away happily! I would definitely ask this apartment maganger when is an acceptable time to be able to bring your bird outside for some fresh air and sunshine. In the nice weather, this is very good for your bird to get out and get some sun, as long as it's not too hot for him. Teflon pans are a big no-no, and those fumes can stay in the house for a while so it's still unsafe even if you're bringing your bird outside while cooking........get some other pans that don't have teflon.....I have the Green Pans and those are great and are very non-stick like teflon.
    Good luck with your situation!

Just wondering... but are you sure you have teflon coated pans? Or pans with PTFE in them? And if so, how do you know?

There are quite a few brands of non-stick cookware that are PTFE free. PTFE could be on other things as well... hair dryers... heating elements in a clothes dryer... toaster oven.... conventional oven... toasters... silicon bakeware... grills...
