hand feeding baby cockatiel chicks.

Postby Lizzy on Fri Aug 13, 2010 4:43 pm

my female cockatiel Cheekie is laying eggs.
I'm not sure about if I should use a crop tube, spoon
or seringe! To feed the chicks when they hatch on
the 24-28 !

No crop tube, please. Are you better with the spoon or syringe? which have you used more often?

If you have not been trained on handfeeding, I would NOT handfeed. It is hard, time consuming, and when done improperly, can hurt or kill the chick.

If possible, it is always better that the parents feed the babies as long as possible. They provide natural antibodies that babies need. I only had to hand feed a baby when daddy bird decided he didn't like his lutino offspring. he plucked that one but still fed his normal greys.

Critical point is that Bostonbudgie had to pull and begin feeding one chick VERY quickly when the plucking began. Preparation means survival. And preparation means training. Anyone planning to breed birds should IMO have a local mentor who provides hands-on training with VERY young chicks and is available in an emergency.
