Does moulting exhaust the bird?

Postby mallagoodee on Thu Aug 12, 2010 6:59 am

My 4 year old single bird, Bailey, has not been herself over the past 2 or 3 weeks.
She's usually quite energetic, annoyingly so, but after leaving her at the vets about 3 weeks ago for about 6 hours, to get her nails trimmed, she's sleeping a lot. She has free reign in the house and I let her out of her cage at approx. 7:30 am and she's back in around 7:30 pm.

And she's started moulting in the last 2 weeks too. Her appetite is good, her poops look normal and I just wondered if moulting would tire the little 'tiel out. It's 8:30 am now and she's sitting on my thigh, while I'm typing, and has one leg tucked in and is making those lovely contented sounds of grinding her beak ... so I'm really not too concerned about her general health, but AM curious about her constant, seeming fatigue.

Thanx
Pete

A bird does change it's behavior a bit when molting. I would keep an eye on the situation if I were you. Is her weight steady? Do you weigh her at home?

See if you can get some "moulting aid" drops to add to her diet.
Over here in Oz we have Vetafarm that makes that, I believe you can get it in the US also (probably very expensive :? ) but perhaps there is a different brand out there that you could use?
When my birds moult they do get a bit more cranky than usual but don't seem to sleep more though, keep an eye on her
