female teil digging at her back & screaming

Postby bostonbudgie on Tue Jun 15, 2010 1:53 pm

Eddie has been doing something new lately. She has been grooming/pciking/digging at a spot on her back and screaming. She isn't pulling any feather out nor is there a sore spot in the area. I am guessing that her ovaries are inflamed since it is mating season and they bother her but this is just a guess the reason I think this is she has been rolling her towel at the bottom of the cage up, rubbing herself on it and making "peeping" noises.
Has anyone else experienced this back biting business with females as well?
Any thoughts on the subject?

Eddie is an indoor bird so I doubt mites are an issue. I do check her feathers and I can not see anything. I am just guessing it's hormonal but i am putting 'feelers" out there to see if anyone else has had this issue.

I've never heard of this either. I would worry that their might be an internal cyst that is causing pain, or something else wrong.

Have you tried the long nights treatment to bring her out of breeding mode? If it is a hormone issue, this would help.

hmmm.. I didn't see any cysts or anything unusual on Eddie
Bedtime earlier might be a good idea. She bites at her back mostly when she is sitting with me. Some part of me thinks maybe it's yeast :?: but I don't know how she could get yeast problems because I keep my cages super clean and change their water twice a day, but who knows. Poor Button always has a problem with yeast
I might have to take her in to the vet for a check up but my husband thinks I just jump to conclusions.

An ovarian cyst would be internal, which would cause pain, but have no external thing you could see. I would try the long nights, but if she doesn't get better in a week, I would take her in.

You could try feeding some plain yogurt with active cultures as well, that does help treat yeast if that is what it is.

Yeast also isn't something that comes from being dirty, being a fungus, it will grow no matter how clean things are. If the internal balance is off, that would trigger it to grow.

Hmmmm....Ok I'll do both.
Sleep early and try yogert (just in case)
If it is hormonal her internal balance could be off due to biological stress.

The only things that come to mind would be a problem with the preening gland, or an infection in the skin/feather follicles. Otherwise though I really have no clue.

Yes I think that the female cocketail can get inflamed and it is always good to reduce sexuality if you have two lovebirds living together. I have the same issue I find that she is picking her feathers all the time underneath to a point where I can see her bottom. It seems to be bulging does any one know if that is normal. I have never seen my dear Cutter my lovebird in so much stress. She is very playful and has lots of energy but that be egg? that hasn;t come out is giving her problems. Does anyone know of this problem and would eating lots of naturally grown vegetable help her. :?:

It is best to start your own thread when asking a new question, many times people will ignore old threads like this one. This is another issue you need to see your vet for. There could be something else going on entirely with both birds. Please take them to the vet as soon as you can, time is always of the essence with birds.
