Sick tiel? Weepy eyes, scruffy feathers....

Postby Claudia on Mon May 03, 2010 2:15 am

Hi guys

might be able to post a piccie soon but a friend of mine has a tiel who is approx 8 years old.
She has weepy and googly eyes, quite bare around her eyes, shivers whenever I see her (but this could be because I am a "stranger") and her feathers are looking really ratty/scruffy.
Have been trying to google these symptoms to see what would come up, nothing that made any sense to me :(
Has anyone got any ideas?
I said to my friend she seems ill, but to be honest I have found her to look scruffy for quite some time now but my friend doesn't seem concerned.
Told her ages ago to worm the bird (she is in an outside cage with lots of visiting doves  and she still hasn't :x
I went past her house again today on my way to the shops with some spot on ivermectin I got from my (regular) vet recently to worm my birds with (I do that twice a year) but she wasn't there so will go past again tomorrow.
Poor little birdie really seems unwell to me.

Another thing, she is yellow all over but hasn't got red eyes and she also has cinnamon pearl markings. She is very very dark yellow I find, have never seen a bird so yellow before.
What mutation could she be being so yellow?? (or could her being so yellow mean she has a liver problem? :| )
thanks everyone

I should add that her eyes are clear but it just looks like her eyes are teary..........so no cloudy discharge or anything, no nasal discharge either............

She could be yellow due to liver problems, or from being a pearl and pied?

She could have bacterial and/or fungal infection as well. Without taking the bird to the vet there's no way to know.

thanks Monica
and yeah, I thought pearl pied as well, have just never seen such an unusual yellow but I guess that could be the cinnamon in her as well...... She is very pretty actually :)
Will tell my friend to go see a vet......

Sounds to me like a bacterial infection. Why does she just bring this poor bird to the vet?

Cinnamon should not cause an unusual amount of yellow in a cockatiel, however pearl and/or pied can. If the bird is not completely yellow then the tiel is probably not a lutino. I've only seen one cockatiel with an unusual amount of yellow in person, and this tiel looked as if his/her head (light pied) was dyed a deep yellow color, with orange cheeks. The rest of the tiel wasn't so yellow. That said, I've seen some very yellow tiels in pictures. One being a lutino pearl. Can't seem to find the pic now, but to have a very yellow tiel could possibly be just a mutation, or it could be a sign of liver failure.

Any updates on her?

Haven't seen her for a few days as have been busy myself.
I have always found this bird to be rather unusual looking, she really is very very yellow but her pearl markings are cinnamon.
Will try get a photo of her, possibly tomorrow.....
I would have thought though, if she had liver issues, she wouldn't have lasted this long :?:
I have known her for quite a few years now and she has always looked the same, well except for this last time when I noticed her scruffy feathers and funny eyes :?

By the way, she is in with a female lovebird (peachface) and she appears fine..........

A bird can live for a while with liver and kidney issues, I have one here myself.

This bird sounds sick and really should see a vet ASAP, before it is too late.

Am pleased to say she looked a lot better when I saw her yesterday as my friend had put a/b eyecream in the bird's eyes.....
Still looking a bit scruffy but she is moulting still :|
Still am wondering what mutation she is being so yellow, no grey anywhere just cinnamon coloured pearl markings but no red eyes.
She must be a heavy pied with all that yellow, there are no splotches anywhere though, just pearl markings....

A clear pied will not have any other colors on them, no pearls, no cinnamon, no nothing. They'll be all yellow or all white with black eyes.

If you could get us a pic we might be able to figure it out... or maybe not.

Haven't seen her for a while but will go this week as my friend's daughter got a new budgie.
Will have a look at the tiel but I believe she is okay :)
