downsizing

Postby Claudia on Tue Dec 29, 2009 12:55 am

I have decided to downsize and sell my double aviary.......
At the moment it house 1 pair of tiels and their only baby on one side, they are going to their new home on New Years day.
Someone I know is buying them off me.

The other part of the aviary has 3 young males in it.

I then have one other aviary, a single one, with Noah and Meg in it, my original pair and their two daughters from this season's breeding (the three young males in the other cage, two of them are Noah and Meg's sons)

It is so hard over here to sell aviary tiels, people seem to only want handreared ones :(
I don't want to handrear as I feel you need a heck of a lot of experience and time to do so succesfully.
I also find it is taking a lot of time in the mornings to feed all of the pets (1 dog, though the kids tend to feed her, 1 indoor pet budgie, the double aviary and the single aviary) plus I am a very clean person  and clean the floors of the aviary every day.
I do this in order to minimise ants, we get loads of them :x and also to keep mice at bay but unfortunately we have had a mouse problem recently in our kitchen cupboards :( another reason I want to downsize.
And I don't really have that many birds compared to some  but still, I just don't have the time or the dedication anymore at the moment.

It is very hard to sell male tiels as well, the females are always desired, but I am keeping Noah and Meg's two girls (one is a gorgeous cinnamon you see, the other one a pied but she is the sweetest little birdie :D )
I would really like to keep a male too, just to get a bit of noise but I find that Noah eventually always ends up bickering with his sons

I am also stuck with this whiteface tiel that was supposed to be a female (magnet method for sexing, pffff yeah right, don't you believe it!) but has turned out to be a male, breeder won't take him back so I am stuck with him and he was expensive :x

Another reason for downsizing is that whenever we go away, it is a big task to ask of any neighbour really
And we like to go away a couple of times a year, even if it's only a few days......

So yeah, sad but it has to be done :?

Awww, at least they are going to be with someone you know, so you'll know how they are doing and maybe even stop to see them once in a while. I know it gets hard with all the cleaning and feeding......it sneaks up on you! Some days when I clean, I spend an hour and a half just cleaning cages and the floor! They make such a huge mess! then when you're done with that, gotta get them all clean fresh water and make sure food dishes are full and clean! I don't mind doing it at all, but when you don't have the time, it makes it rough! I'd prefer a male tiel myself, to avoid the problems that could arise from egg laying....I never planned to have a female, they told me she was a male and I was stupid and believed it, but luckily it all worked out for the best as Boss is a good girl and never lays any eggs! I love the vocal male and how they get all happy when they get vocal and the wings go out and their little beaks go and it's just so cute! plus some males talk! and the fact that they are not hand fed is nothing.....it may take time, but they'll be just as friendly as a hand tame bird with time, love and understanding. People are just impatient and want their bird friendly NOW!

I agree with Woody :D
I know what you mean about endless cleaning. I am a germaphobe so I am constainly cleaning. But I also enjoy the company of my birds over anything else :D .My favorite part of the day is having my birds sitting with me watching TV. I keep a roll of paper towels next to the couch to pick up any poops on my shirt. The birds look forward to this daily routine all lining up for their turn for a head scratching. Oh yeah, they will bicker amoungst themselves and sometimes will pick on Button. Linus will try to boss all the females around. But seriously, there is nothing better than hanging out with all my feathered pals :D

The aviary didn't take long to sell as I knew it wouldn't :D
It is a really good one and I had quite a few enquiries.
A really nice lady is coming to pick it up tomorrow and coincidentally she is a member of an Australian budgie forum I also participate on :D
She had just gotten herself a gorgeous show budgie pair (the ones with the big foreheads, do you guys in the USA/Canada call those show budgies or something else??) and she has a few others in a patio aviary so this aviary is perfect for her.

I have got the three young boys in with Meg and Noah and the two girls in the other aviary (that aviary is pretty large, 2.26m long and 1.52m deep but not sure if large enough for 7 birds though :| )
They seem to be getting along okay so I have decided to keep the whiteface for now, especially since I have confirmed with the breeder he is split for cinnamon.
Since I have a lovely cinnamon girl, if I ever decide to breed with her at least I have a nice male to go with her (well.....nice  he is the only bird I have that hisses at me constantly :| )
I am still trying to sell one of the other boys though as I would like to have at least one boy less in there in case of quarreling :|

Sorry you have to go through this. So do I, but I'm having far less luck than you are!

Over here, the regular ones are called either parakeets or budgies, occasionally even american budgies...

The larger ones, with the boofy heads, are called budgies, english budgies, show budgies, and exhibition budgies...

(just to reitterate bostonbudgie and add more info)

It's rather annoying to go into a store and find parakeets and budgies for sale!

There's a very good chance that I am moving, but I don't know when. If and when we move, I do not know where we will be moving to. What I do know, is that if we stay in the area, we'll probably be renting out an apartment or something like that, so less space. If we don't stay in the area, then chances are, we'll be moving in with a relative that has small rooms. The house is decent enough in size, but all the rooms (except the master bedroom) are rather small... so where-ever we go, I need to "downsize" to three cages... which I figured would be an HQ Flight Cage and two cages about 32x23, which are still rather big cages (so as to use up the least amount of space without taking up too much room, and prevent overcrowding). Nine birds, 3 cages. The HQ cage I can have Noel, and if need be, Casey in (although I have no clue how I'd work out their diet, considering it's different). Charlie would take up one of the 32x23 cages to himself. That leaves 4 (maybe 5) tiels, a bourke, and a budgie to the other 32x23 cage (once I get it...). That's in inches, as well, if you'd like to figure out the measurements in cm.

Dash is a very handsome budgie! He looks cheeky, and it'd be so neat to hear him talk!

Shame to hear you need to move :( Have you sold any birds as well?

Dash is cheeky but also very sweet, he loves being with you but doesn't like to be touched though but that's okay, he is happy to sit on your hand or shoulder and his feet get soooo warm, I love that! :D

Im not selling any of them. Most of the birds here, well, all but one, are second hand plus birds. I'm not interested in money. I'm interested in the *right* home for each bird, where-ever they may go. Money can't guarantee that. It would mean more to me knowing they went into a great home vs getting money for them. So the question, have I sold any? No. Have I even found homes for any of them? Sadly, no again. I *HAVE* taken 4 female budgies to the local bird store and gave them up for free, and a family with kids did end up buying them. Personally though, I'd like to know what kind of homes these guys are going into rather than not knowing. It's easier to find a home with a person who's not interested in the birds well being than finding the right/perfect home for them.

Dash sounds like a funny little guy! When ya gonna get him on video???? :D

the question is more.......when are you going to get technical enough to figure out how to get it on Youtube

Yeah I know what you mean about finding a good home for your birds though, I find I ask a lot of questions when people call for my tiel babies  especially when people assume they are tame, talking and cuddly  (sure, that is why I am only selling them for $15 instead of the $90 I could ask for them if they were TAME TALKING AND CUDDLY :x ) sighhhh
Those are the kind of people I do NOT sell my babies to

I'd ask at least $20, maybe more... but if I found a suitable home, I wouldn't charge the new owners! More of a safety thing, I suppose... if a home could not be found that I thought would do, then I'd keep the bird myself!

It's just too bad really, because when you start asking a bunch of questions here, all of a sudden the people here back out!
