foraging toys

Postby bostonbudgie on Wed Nov 25, 2009 2:52 pm

I noticed that there are some news out in the market that are "foraging toys". Little boxes that you hide treats in. Also I saw this new product called "confetti bits" that is basically confettit you put in food dishes for birds to forage through. :?:
Has anyone used these products.?
Mine still seem to like little plastic chains, toys made out of straws, toys made out of chinese finger rolls, and little wicker balls.

Mine love the boxes. I cheat and use paper from my shredder to cover their food and treats to make them work.

I do the same thing, I use paper from my shredder. I put it in a rectangle low sided tupperware container and then dump in some Nutra-berries, and a little seed mix. It keeps them busy for hours. Just make sure it is only paper from the shredder, sometimes I shred pictures or credit cards.

Two years ago a I bought those kaytee foraging treat boxes. It took a while for any of the birds to realize it was something to play with and to dig at. Unfortunately Button ended up pooping on the box and it was no longer "playable" :?

I don't put the boxes on the bottom of the cage. I use an extra food cup to hold them. I also place an almond or other treat in a hole in the box so they can see that there is something in there. I also use the Chinese finger traps from Grey Feather, stuff them with nutriberries, and put them in the "treat cup" as well.

I saw advertized in Bird Talk that Lafeber has this new product called "nutri-forage". It looks like a big piece of pasta in which you heat up and stuff an avicake in it for the bird to dig out.

That sounds interesting. My birds like the lafeber items!

For those interested, here is the product http://www.lafeber.com/pinnacle/index.php?p=catalog&parent=43&pg=1 and here is a review on it http://foragingforparrots.com/ideas/nutri-forage-review-and-tweaks/

If anyone is interested in trying it out, I would follow what is stated on the tweaks review page, it sounds cheaper!

Dino prefers his avi-cakes broken up into smaller pieces - he had a hard time eating off the the square chunk. I think I will try putting it into a small bead or piece of pasta.
