To Trim or not to trim

Postby ladybriann on Wed Nov 18, 2009 9:55 pm

Hello fellow Tiel owners. It's been about a week since Buddy has come to live with us. He is a ten year (or so) old cockatiel whose only previous owner, Frank, had to go into assisted living and couldn't take Buddy :( . So I am Buddy's second owner. He is still very afraid of my hand or fingers coming close to him so I have been going slowly with him. I can stand right up to him but I can only get my hand about 10 inches from him without him hissing and fake biting. I call it fake biting because the few times I came close enough he put beak on my hand but didn't really bite.

Today he was out of the cage but still on the cage when he decided to fly to the other side of the room. He landed on the floor and it took me almost ten minutes to convince him it was ok to step-up to my hand. I took the opportunity to have a quiet talk session with him while he was still on my hand. I was pleased it went well. :)

Anyway, I noticed he had kind of a rough landing in his short flight across the room (we're talking an 8' X 10' room, with my desk, computer, and several other bird cages.). I think part of his flight problem is due to the fact that whoever trimmed his wings, did it the "old school" way and only trimmed his flight feathers on one wing, My question is: do I trim the other wing, to make him more balanced, but most likely add more stress to his little life right now. Or do I wait until he's more secure in his new home? Like I stated before he is very reluctant to trust me quite yet.

For his safety, I would most definitely trim the other wing personally.
He is a nice looking bird by the way :D

I would not trim him, especially not considering the progress you're making. Trimming his other wing won't make the clipped one refeather any faster. It'll simply give him NO flight vs unbalanced flight.

    So glad you asked!
