New Tiel coming home

Postby ladybriann on Wed Nov 11, 2009 12:59 pm

Hello, I am bringing home a cockatiel rescue today. Is there anything I should know about caring for a cockatiel that is different from other parrot care. I have Lovebirds, a Parakeet and Blue Headed Pionus and I feed them Pretty Bird pellets, and Dr. Harvey's food, some seed for the little guys and fresh food.

I think this guy, his name is Buddy, has been on a seed only diet. His owner of 10+ years had to go into assisted living and could not take him with. So, for the last two+ weeks someone has been just "stopping in to feed the bird". I don't know too much about him other than he was used to being out of his cage a lot with his owner.
I'd like to make this transition as easy as possible for Buddy and be successful. I want to be his forever home.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. "Mytielwoody", if you're out there, it looks like we have a similar flock :D (however, I also have 4 Zebra, 2 Gouldian and 2 Shafttail Finches :o oh my!)

Poor Buddy and his mama  Thank you so very much for taking him in. Only a couple things come to mind at first blush. I'll keep thinking. First is that 'tiels do better on more seed and fewer pellets. The high protein in pellets causes deadly disease. Roudybush rice pellets are lower protein than most, 10% compared to Pretty Bird's 14%. I use a combo of Roudybush rice pellets with Kaylor Sweet Harvest no-sunflower (and no corn) tiel seed (protein 11% and fat 8%) and a little Goldenfeast Australian blend (16.5% protein and 14% fat). If Buddy weighs more than 90-95 gms, you might want to offer him only no-sunflower seed blends, and sprouted are much better. I also feed mine a combo of grains (usually organic brown rice and quinoa) mixed 40/60 with minced organic veggies and greens (usually broccoli, carrots, dandelions, red peppers, arugula, and kale). My tiels love chewing on leafy cut branches and perching on them, all sizes.

Is he flighted? If so, you'll need to be VERY careful since he's not used to the danger of other birds biting off his toes and beak  Guard him carefully! Tiels are WONDERFUL birds, very affectionate and playful. Once he's gotten adjusted, I daresay you'll be VERY pleased with him. This afternoon, a friend met a 27yo tiel, so you and Buddy might have a nice long time together

Thanks for the info. That is a great help. I would have never known "more seed and fewer pellets". So many advocate pellets should be the main food.

Buddy is settling quite well already. He came out of his cage yesterday for the first time and is stepping up very nicely. He is already talking, now both Buddy and TikiTay (my Pionus) say "whatcha doing" every time I come in the aviary room. They are still checking each other out from a distance. Their flight ability are about equal, just enough to not crash to the floor.

So far everything is going smoothly. I will have to get some of the foods Bluesbird mentioned. He is eating the ZooPrem Entree and Fruit pellets I put in his cage. My trick is to put the newly introduced food in dishes higher up in the cage, and it worked with Buddy to get him to try a new food.

He is pretty quiet right now, it will be interesting to see how he is once the honeymoon period is over. :D

Good news and YW! The rice pellets would be good for your pi too, as they also suffer deadly gout from the protein in too many parrot foods.

Yes, we do have a similar flock! Do any of your other birds get along with your Pi? Always gotta watch those lil lovies, but I'm sure I probably don't have to tell you that! Pip is great, but he's cage territorial so if he's in his cage and somebirdy lands on it, they'll get their feet bitten! My other lovie is not cage territorial like that and the birds can land on his cage and he won't go after their feet and is not much of a biter, where Pip is. My cockatiels are the most easy going, well behaved birds.....so undemanding! They're just happy no matter what! Ivy and Pip I sometimes call trouble 1 and trouble 2.....between the two of them sometimes they give me grey hairs. I sat here sewing little lovie beak holes in my shirts last night.....he chews little holes in the shoulders of all my shirts! Such little stinkers! Ivy sometimes just gets all worked up and hyper and wants to be on me every minute. They keep me on my toes for sure! Not Woody and Boss though.....they are just such good birds! Congrats on your new addition to the flock!

My Black Masked Lovebird is named Pip also! Then I have a Fischers, named Fletcher; and Sweet Pete and Olive are my Peachfaced. Olive is my big stinker bird, being the only female she can be very nasty when she wants to be. She is very cage territorial but is nice out of the cage. She does NOT get along with my Pi though, so I very seldom let them out at the same time. Olive hasn't left holes in my clothes but she has on left holes in my fingers! I think Buddy will eventually get along well with my Pi, TikiTay. Right now Tiki is still a bit shy when Buddy is out. Here's pictures of Buddy: Isn't he cute :D
