weird behavior

Postby bostonbudgie on Wed Nov 04, 2009 7:43 am

I had a female pearl pied "Princess"stay with us. She had been bounced around from house to house but she seemed to happy with the attention she got at my house and seeing all the other tiels. She was sitting on her cage and Eddie (female grey) came over to her."Princess" regurged on Eddie (!?!) What was that all about?

I thought the same thing but the owner said Princess has laid eggs before and Eddie has definitely laid eggs. Is it possible Princess could be attracted to the same sex? I do not know if Princess has ever been exposed to other birds and maybe she just got excited from all the commotion. I dunno. :?
I asked the owner if she has ever seen any regurg behavior before and she was surprised. I will see Princess again next week so I will observe

Not uncommon at all. In my current, greatly reduced flock of only 20, I have 2 threesomes, one all male and very loving of each other; the other 2 males and a female. I've had same-sex pairs in the past as well. Only once have I had same-sex birds of different genera bond, but I've always tried giving my birds choices w/in their own genus.

My male budgie "whook" definitely prefers the company of other male budgies than over females. I've seen him feed other males but ignore the females. He is an alpha male too.

Just like a percentage of human beings are born homosexual, it happens occasionally in the animal kingdom too. I had a male cockatiel, that if he was human would have been the most effeminate man. He shared his cage with a female that was constantly trying to seduce him and entice him and he was just HORRIFIED. I'd swear he'd give me looks like WHO is SHE and WHY is SHE HERE?! He'd start singing to other males however. He wasn't alpha and yes, he was definitely a male.
Sounds like you're going to have to get her a little birdie rainbow flag.

ha ha ha ha! that is a crack up i.e. ( birdy rainbow flag hanging on the cage)
Seriously, there are many cases of primates and dolphins that are homosexual. It will be interesting to see if indeed "Princess" is attracted to "Eddie" or if the regurgitation is in fact a health issue. Princess will be visiting again next week so I will ask the owner if she has been regurging.
Getting back to "Whook", He not only likes other males but he is heavily into autoerotics. He will spend hours looking at himself in the mirror and doing "teenage boy" things to his perch. It's getting a little x-rated around here!

"Princess" is at our house again. She gets snippy at times but just loves to follow "Eddie" around. It cracks me up.Eddie doesn't know what to make of this arrangement but at the same time, she doesn't seem to mind Princess.

A good night's sleep definitely makes a difference in all the bird's behavior. Since it gets dark earlier as much as I hate to put the birds to bed early i know they are happier in the morning after a good nights rest.
I definitely see the difference in Princess's behavior. She had been pretty cranky when she first came here. She gets a good 12 -13 hours sleep here at my house .She is a happier and friendlier bird :D
