My other breeding pair

Postby Claudia on Sat Oct 24, 2009 8:15 pm

I paired up a male from Meg and Noah's clutch from last year with a mature female (approx 2 to 3 years old).
The male, Saffron, is a pied split for whiteface and pearl, the female, Coco, is a cinnamon whiteface pearl.
They laid 6 eggs but only 1 was fertile and I now have a lovely white bub in the nestbox since last Monday
So this little one will either be a whiteface or a whiteface pearl (here's fingers crossed for that  )

My gut said the male was probably a bit too young to breed with but had a few people say on Ozzie forum he should be okay (he is just over 1).
He has been a fantastic partner and father so far but I think due to him being so young that perhaps only 1 egg was fertile :?:
Never mind, since they are first timers, I don't mind them only have 1 baby.
I breed for fun, it's my hobby and I only allow my pairs to have 1 clutch per year as they do tend to lay large clutches and I want them in good health, not knackered and worn out and potentially calcium deficient etc :?
I am certainly not in it for "the money" , not that there is any money to be made out of tiels anyway, they are so cheap, unless you handrear them but with all the time and effort you still won't make any money really

Will post a pic next week when the chick's eyes are open :)

Lucille was 6 years old and Linus was a little over a year old when they first mated. They had one baby in that first clutch-a lutino.
I think that is all they could handle at the time (Unfortunately when the lutino feathers started coming in Linus started tearing the feathers out so she had to be hand-fed after that! :o )

Did Lucille only lay the one egg or did she lay more?
Awful when they pluck the babies
I had Noah attack his babies this year, he didn't do that last year, but since he was agressive with them this time round, that's it! No more breeding him and Meg! :( Shame, they sure make beaut babies

In that first clutch I think she laid 5 eggs and only one hatched. The second clutch, she laid 6 eggs and four hatched (one baby was deformed) :(

aw shame, a deformed baby
This little one is doing really well, and I am very impressed with the parents :D
Now that the chick is getting older, they seem to swap more often with eachother, I guess the chick being a week old now, doesn't need to be sat on anymore constantly (especially since it's warm here now) but I feel so sad for the poor fella being all on it's own so am glad mum and dad are keeping it company
I can already see some grey colour coming through, can't wait to see if it's a normal whiteface or a whiteface pearl, will need to be patient for another two weeks
