stinky

Postby bostonbudgie on Thu Oct 08, 2009 3:46 pm

I clean my cages constainly. Lately, especially with Carl having megabac and the unfortunate incident with the pigeon I have been more neurotic than usual in cleaning.
When I came home after being away for a few days I noticed my house has a 'smell". At first I thought it was stale smell from the house being closed up perhaps from soiled newspapers left in the rubbish bin.
I took each cage one by one outside to give it a thorough cleaning. I took apart toys and perches as well. I had noticed the cloth perches giving off a "smell" so I removed them and soaked them. OMG those cloth perches were stinky! I was horrified because I continually spot clean them but obviously that didn't do the trick. I soaked them in hot soapy (bleach detergent) water and scrubbed them with a wire brush, left them outside to dry but I still could not get the smell out!
Has anyone ever had this issue? and is there something "safe" to get the stink out!

I use Pet Focus cleaner sometimes on them, or a bleach/water solution to clean the rope perches. I don't usually have to do it often. I have a bouncy boing made with rope for Pip and he sits on that thing constantly when he's in his cage and poops all over it, so I have to clean that one more often. I notice it gets a little smelly, but not too bad and the smell is always gone after washing. All my other ones never really get smelly.

They were "poop" free. They are just getting old (although they still look OK)
I had first sprayed them with lysol beach spray and then let them soak. I then scrubbed them with a bleach solution and they still have an odor. I am wondering if it is time to chuck them since it is years worth of urates that have penetrated the perches. I just have so many cages so I hate to have to buy 10 or more new perches!
BTW the birds seem happy with the massive clean-up since I changed toys and refurbished their favorites. :D

Try soaking them in a borox solution. It deoderizes well. Then run them through a rinse cycle in the dishwasher.
