Dino update

Postby Luna Bella on Sat Sep 26, 2009 6:08 pm

Hi everyone! I know i haven't posted is a while, a lot going on.

I can't believe Dino has been with us for 9 months already!! And what a bugger he it! And spoiled!! Yes he is, I don't know how it happened ( well, I do have a little clue  ) He HATES being in his cage - doesn't mind the top or the sides though. He'd rather be with either hubby or myself then eat! Crazy bird. He LOVES scrambled eggs! Made especially for him with all sorts of goodies added. His weight is holding at 80gm.

I still get choked up if I think of Luna too much and what happened - and yes I still feel extremely guilty about it

How has everyone been? Claudia, those chicks are adorable! And BB - I hope Button and Carl are on the mend.

I'd love to read up dates on everyone

Jo

I'm still around! Haven't really posted much though... Good to hear Dino is doing so well!

I've been to the A-Vets every 2 weeks since July 25th, and a few times inbetween.... was just in today (Saturday) and I'll probably be going back next Saturday... and will probably have to get some meds on Monday... Most of this has been for Noel, the cherry head. All this back and forth has really been frustrating me... :x

Otherwise though, everybody seems to be doing good.

It is pretty quiet here! Woody & Boss are both doing great! I've moved my birds now to their own bird room in the end of Aug. so there's been changes for them. I've noticed since moving in there that Woody doesn't sing as much and mating doesn't seem to be going on either as far as I can see....but they still seem like their happy selves, of course they always seem content no matter what you do! Everybirdy has gotten used to our newest addition now, Rudy, another lovebird. One thing though, over time Ivy has grown quite the jealousy of Woody and Boss and she even bit me once because she was mad that I was holding Boss! I was in shock! All I have to do is talk to Woody or Boss and she'll run right over all mad and trying to get my attention away from them! So it's been difficult now with out time because they can no longer be out with Ivy. Pip has grown quite a love for Ivy.....these two don't even have to be watched all the time when out together. They preen each other and get all lovey together and even share the travel cage to go outside for some sunshine! They are true buddies! although with Ivy's calmer nature, by the time night time falls, she sometimes gets tired of having his constant shadow and gets annoyed with him! The only real health issues I've had are pretty minor.....Pip seems to get a bacterial infection every year in June, right when summer starts. First year it was wet coming from his nose/nares, and this year it was an ear infection(bacterial). He always appears so healthy and happy through it all though.....even the vet is surprised he has the infection when I bring him in because he appears to be in great health. I am going to try this winter giving him a UV light and see if that helps. The infections always clear up easily and then no more until the warm summer weather sets in again the next year. Could be some kind of allergies, who knows, but I plan on getting to the bottom of it eventually! In the mean time it only costs me a vet visit each year until we figure out what will help prevent these infections! All birdies here are healthy and happy though......glad to hear Dino is doing so well!

Hi MTW - glad to hear your growing flock is doing well! It's amazing how jealous they could get. Do you like having them in their own room? I assume they were in the main living room area before. Has your interaction with them slowed a bit since the move? Dino is in the same set-up we had with Luna, a day cage in the living room and a sleep cage in a spare bedroom.

There are a lot of differences between them! When Dino gets tired he gets VERY nippy!! He'll attack any movement near him while Luna would just close her eyes and tuck in. When in her sleep cage she would hiss but that was it. He HATES being locked in his day cage!! He will pace on the floor, climb the front wall and he'll sing to get our attention to let him out! What a bugger!!

I brought him in to get his nails done, and while there I gave him a chile pepper (not realizing it was one - it was round and small) Anyway he LOVED it!! He dug into it as if he hadn't eaten in days!! So of course I bought some for him - I'm such a sucker. I also figured out he likes the avi-cakes if I break it up for him.

Keeping a clean cage - yes, Dino is a good little cage-keeper! He doesn't like have spent millet sprays in the cage so he promptly discards them out the front door for local Waste Management (me) pick-up.

You gotta love'em

Well, the room change was a big adjustment....probably the biggest for me though! Ivy was upset about the move for the first day.....then she was back to normal! None of the others cared too much. Yes, they had all been right in the middle of everything int he living room.(cages were taking over!) I have found there to be alot of good things and some bad about moving them into their own room. The best is that I think they sleep alot better in there at night. Also they are alot safer in there as I can shut the door at anytime we have the outside door open for any length of time. Pip sleeps out of cage at night, so having them in their own room makes that a safer thing now. He stays put, but I can now shut the door and there's no danger of him running around on the floor and getting stepped on. He gets up earlier in the morning than the rest of the birds and goes to Ivy's cage and sleeps under her cover til we get them up. (he loves Ivy) The bad side of them having their own room is that I don't have them right with me every second like I used to! Yes, the interaction between us has slowed just a little bit though, but we make due and I am going to make them a play area in the living room so they can spend more time out here again.
I know with cockatiels they tend to get grumpy at night when they get tired. Mine always have their little spats over where they're going to sleep for the night. they will fight over the same spot probably about half the time....then the rest of the times they settle in peacefully. They never hiss or bite, but I have heard a hiss or two from them at night rarely.
