I guess you are right, it probably was a crossover, because there is no way that I can think of that you could produce a normal grey hen, a cinnamon hen, and pearl male offspring. The next question is, who was the crossover?

    I don't understand genetics one little bit I'm afraid, I sucked at that in High School :lol:
    I'd say Noah passed on his cinnamon gene to Mocha, but not the pearl gene.
    I guess the genetics calculator can not be 100% accurate all the time :wink:

    This is the outcome if you put Noah at x2 cinnamon pearl

    Mother:Whiteface Pearl Split To Pied
    Father:Grey Split To Pied {X2: Cinnamon Pearl}

    male offspring:
    13% Pied Split To Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
    13% Pied Pearl Split To Whiteface {X1: Cinnamon}
    13% Grey Split To Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
    13% Pearl Split To Whiteface {X1: Cinnamon}
    25% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface {X2: Pearl}
    25% Pearl Split To Pied Whiteface {X1: Cinnamon}

    female offspring:
    13% Pied Split To Whiteface
    13% Pied Cinnamon Pearl Split To Whiteface
    13% Grey Split To Whiteface
    13% Cinnamon Pearl Split To Whiteface
    25% Grey Split To Pied Whiteface
    25% Cinnamon Pearl Split To Pied Whiteface

    but then it is really weird for Mocha to be just a cinnamon considering she "should" have been a cinnamon pearl or a pied cinnamon pearl :roll: weird hey
    I don't fully understand the crossover gene bit either but am guessing then that that must be what it is though, Noah only giving her his cinnamon gene but not the pearl.
    Anyone who can shine some more light on this??? :D

    had another look :wink:
    read this:

    There is also such a thing as REVERSE crossover, where a male that contains a double mutation on one X chromosome passes on only a single sex-linked mutation!

    That must be what has happened, in that case the grey female and the male pearl last year, both make sense :wink:
    So the calculation (see above) with Noah x2 cinnamon pearl is still what makes most sense with the reverse crossover, so that makes Mocha just a cinnamon and not a cinnamon pearl, 25% chance of a grey female (last year!) and 25% of a cinnamon pearl split pied whiteface so that would be Mocha with the pearl gene missing.
    I can not tell yet if she is split pied as the only feathers missing still are the back of the head feathers :lol:
    Will be few more days and I will be able to tell, can't wait cause I find this extremely interesting (though difficult to understand at times :roll: )

    and yes, I can see some white feathers appearing on the back of Mocha's head, so she is split for pied :)

    they've all fledged now, since two days, just in time as the weather has really started to heat up :D
    For some strange reason Meg was only feeding the youngest chick, luckily I put Noah back into the aviary and he fed the two eldest chicks but the second youngest had not had a feed for a day and a half :shock:
    I ended up giving him some food via a small syringe but couldn't get much into him of course :?
    I was really starting to freak out, Meg was basically just sitting there staring into space and the babies would come up to her and scream their little heads off
    I cried that day :cry:
    All seems to be back to normal though and especially yesterday the babies got fed beyond believe :lol:
    Today though Meg seemed preoccupied again and keeps on getting agitated and whistling as if there are wild birds around (she normally gets like that then) but there was nothing that should have such an impact on her :roll:
    The only thing I can think of is that she needs to lay another egg, that was the case two days ago too and I can again see an "egg lump" :roll:
    I am getting sick of her laying eggs all the time, she has already laid 5 since these babies were born (and that was with Noah being separated from her)
    The babies are just beautiful and are starting to nibble at the broccoli and bread and they all seem to love millet already :lol:

    Weird... are the birds outside in an avairy or inside? I am wondering if that makes a difference by Meg's behavior.
    How old are the babies now?
