Pesto and Dudley

Postby Pesto on Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:26 am

First I want to thank everyone for the amazing advise that I was given on introducing my new lovebird to Pesto. It is really appreciated and I will definitely keep an eye on the biting! I fetched Dudley (LB) on Saturday afternoon. I don't think I completely realised how diffirent the two species are! Pesto is like the zen master. Sitting on this perch and just observing the world. Duds on the other hand is like a supercharged video game. ALways on the move in his cage and pulling at his toys and trying to see where he can get out. I know it has only been a day and a half, but I have already noticed some very intersting things about Dudley (I work with animals, so observing is like second nature to me). It seems that somewhere in his past he must have had some attention. He imitates kisses and reacts to budgie sounds - so maybe he was kept with other birds? He isn't tame, but he certainly isn't completely wild. He allows you to stick your hand in his cage, fiddle with whatever is in there and he just sits. He also allows you to pick him up and he hasn't bitten me yet! I think with a bit of love and time spent with him, he will be tame quite quickly.
Pesto wants nothing to do with him. I have put their cages across the room from one another. I had Pesto on my shoulder and stood next to Duds' cage and Pesto just hissed at the cage(he doesn't like new things, unlike Dudley who did not mind me filling his cage with interesting toys). i'm glad he came home with me. I think I need the life as much as Pesto needs the friend. I'll keep you posted.

I'm glad that they seem to be doing well so far.

In Dudley's cage, if the doors slide up, I would use something to lock them off, with his inquisitive mind, he would be letting himself out soon!

It is so exciting getting more birds :D
Yup, observing behaviors will keep them (both) safe. Lovebirds are little nuts! :)

The first thing I did was to peg all the doors closed. He still got out though. i realised that there's one spot where the bars are just a bit wider than the rest and he was getting through there! So I cable-tied it all closed. He has stayed in for 2 days now. I was quite worried going home last night after work, cause I wasn't sure what to expect. All was well and he hadn't escaped. One day at a time. One day at a time!

That's the one thing with lovies......they tend to LOVE their freedom and want OUT! My lovie lifts his door and drops it over and over to send me the message....HEY, I want OUT of here! He shoved his way out the front door of his cage first thing when we first got him! Brave little stinkers they are! Pip is the energizer birdie....never stops, never naps! where the tiels nap a few times during the day. You will notice alot of interesting things with a lovie! then also tend to love their baths! and get really into it! Mine jumps right in the water! it's the cutest thing watching them take a bath! Pesto will get used to the sight of a lil lovie running around and won't hiss at him eventually. Just take things really slow. My tiels hissed at Ivy on her first day here too, but now they are so used to her climbing all over their cage! congrats on your new lovie!
