Update on Pesto and questions about introducing another bird

Postby Pesto on Thu Aug 27, 2009 7:23 am

Hi All

Pesto went for his 9th weekly vet visit today. Even though his whole beak has healed beautifully, my vet says that it does not look like the beak is lengthening at all. So that is that then. Some sad news, but we did try and I believe that we have done everthing possible. I will just keep on taking him back for beak trimms. He is doing very well and is spending the day with me at work. It's like Christmas for him. All the new sights and sounds and all the people here love him. One guy actually said that he likes his beak like that and that all tiels should come with beaks like Pesto's! :D He hasn't slepts at all today. He must be exhausted! He normally sleeps most of the day.

When I went to the vet about 2 months ago, I was introduced to a lovebird that someone had left there and never returned to fetch. How can people do that? He has a great big cage and he is very friendly. I have offered to take him in. He has been at the vet for more than 6 months. I can do with some advise. Pesto is 7 years old and I am not sure how old the lovebird is (I'm calling him Dudley). The LB is quite tame, but not finger tame. I don't think it will take very long to get him to be completely tame. He obiviously was at some stage, cause you can walk right up to him. He only flies away when you try and touch him. The vet is clipping his nails, trimming his beak and feathers and deworming him. He is in perfect health and I don't think that quarantine is necessary. He has, after all been under the supervision of an amazing vet. Does anyone know how LBs and Tiels get along. I hope it is good. Pesto really does not have a problem with my other pets. I hope the LB doesn't either. Anything I should or shouldn't do when I bring him home on Saturday? I am really looking forward to it, but at the same time I am quite nervous. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Some do well with lovies, others not so well.

For Pesto's saftey since lovies are known to bite hard, I would keep them caged seperately, but next to each other for the company. Arrange perches at the same levels and food dishes next to each other so they can eat and rest near each other if they choose to. If they act like they are getting along, you can allow time out together, supervised only.

I agree since he has been in with the vet that a full quarantine won't be necessary, but that is me. I would consult your vet for the final say.

For one thing, they would HAVE to be caged separately and when both birds out of their cage to be monitored closely. Yes, lovebirds are cute looking but can be sneaky brats! They can easily bite the toes off of a teil. I bird sit a lovey. He is a beautiful and friendly bird but I do not trust him when my tiels fly over to him to investigate. I do not let the birds go near his cage. When they are out & about for flight time. I watch him like a hawk.
Lovebirds are cute & funny birds :D
