Opinions on mutation please

Postby Claudia on Sun Aug 16, 2009 5:10 am

Hi all
found a mature hen for sale and picked her up today.
She is a cinnamon whiteface pearl, her cinnamon is very brown though (never seen a cinnamon quite that brown) and her face is very white.
Could she be pied pearl to have such a white face and chest or is she really "just" a cinnamon w/f pearl and not pied on top of it as well?
We reckon she is beautiful though..... :D
I have done two pictures a bit larger, so you can see a bit better......

She looks like a whiteface cinnamon pearl pied to me.

The cinnamon whitefaces tend to be light colored.
Check her eyes. If they are red, you might have a fallow, insted of a cinnamon.
If the face is "very white" you might have a young male.

Minus the red eyes, I was thinking fallow.... I've never before seen such a *brown* cockatiel! (besides fallows, of course) She probably has such a clear face because she is a "heavy pearl" - by that I mean she has no coloration within her tail feathers except for the quill itself. Combined with the other mutation (whatever it is, cinnamon or?) would give her that very clear face.

Here's some pics for comparison... first are pics of Sunshine's (the pearl I had) tail feathers

A pearl with more markings than Sunshine

The "heavy pearl" cockatiel (also notice how the pearls are differently than others)

Another "regular" pearl

"Heavy pearl" again

I don't think your girl is pied at all.

I have sent a pic off to a well known tiel breeder in Oz and she said def. not pied as her wings are cinnamon and not white.
As for her chest being light she said the sun can bleach the feather colours so should be interesting to see what happens with next molt :)
Thanks everyone for your thoughts :D
