Whiteface Albino?? URGENT NEED HELP

Postby Claudia on Thu Aug 06, 2009 2:59 am

Is there such a thing???

I am having a look at a whiteface pearl hen that comes from a Whiteface Albino father and Whiteface Pied mother (so dad must be split for Pearl, correct??)
Now, what would the father look like??
And would the young hen (the Whiteface Pearl) in that case be split ino??

thanks everyone

I know there is a whiteface lutino, but not albino.

http://www.kirstenmunson.com/cockatiels/blue.html

You can use this genetics calculator to figure out what the parents must have been to get the chick you are seeing. Given what you are saying, this is what the calculator comes up with.

Mother:Pied Whiteface
Father:Whiteface Lutino Split To {X1: Pearl}

male offspring:
50% Whiteface Split To Pied {X1: Lutino Pearl}
50% Whiteface Split To Pied {X1: Lutino}

female offspring:
50% Whiteface Lutino Pearl Split To Pied
50% Whiteface Lutino Split To Pied

Re: Whiteface Albino??

When it comes to the majority of parrot species, there is no *TRUE* albino mutation, because the albino bird is not *ONE* mutation, but *TWO* mutations, i.e. blue lutino. Blue, or in the case of cockatiels, whiteface, indicates the lack of yellow pigment, and lutino is the ino gene. So in truth, there is no "whiteface albino" - let alone an "albino" gene (singular) in cockatiels.

Cinnamon, Lutino, Pearl, and Yellowcheek (SL) are all sex-linked mutations. Males being XX, females XY. (not being technical here with the chromosomes) This means that the mutation is carried on the chromosome that determines sex. Females cannot be split for sex-linked traits - either they are visuals, or they do not carry the gene at all.

Without knowing what other offspring the pair of produced, particularly what mutations all the hens are, you can't say for sure if the father is a split or visual pearl. Here's another possibility.

Mother:Pied Whiteface
Father:Whiteface Lutino Pearl

male offspring:
100% Whiteface Split To Pied {X1: Lutino Pearl}

female offspring:
100% Whiteface Lutino Pearl Split To Pied

Either way, he cannot produce a whiteface pearl, unless he's not a lutino at all. Can you get us pictures of the parents as well as the offspring?

They guy was full of crap! (Sorry but I am LIVID    )

Decided I wanted his whiteface pied instead of the pearl and then he said he would meet me as he had to go to football ( I should have known better! Always buy the bird from where it is being kept!)
Bird had 1 sore eye and filthy feathers.
IN the end, he gave her to us for free because he was "just going to let her go otherwise"
I can not believe one single word of what he told me! He had no clue what he was on about anyway. He told me the mother was split for pearl, yeah right, a hen can not be split for pearl (right?) and that his whiteface pearl hen was split for pied, lutino and whiteface grrrr what a loser
She has a bit of a bald spot on the back of her head so must be Lutino in her, but her eyes are not red......

She might even have Psittacosis so I am freakin annoyed as you can all understand!
Her poos are disgusting, my (normal) vet gave her a dose of Ivermectin (stuff you put on the back of their necks for worming, mites etc) and since then she has passed 1 tapeworm, various yucky slimy bright green poos and one poo with an obvious worm in it (small, white worm) YUCK YUCK YUCK
Do I really want to give this bird a chance???
I do not know
I will have to give it till Monday now but am very concerned about the fact that I have her indoors, and really feel like putting her outside.........
Your thoughts???

This is her. You can see her eye is sore, the other one is okay.

and yes, unfortunately that IS indeed the only spare cage I have and yeah I know it is crap and round
I was expecting to bring home a healthy bird that would be quarantined in the patio aviary, not a sick bird in a small canary cage (even too small for a canary :( )

Well Claudia, she is a pretty bird. And while she wasn't what you were expecting, she may have been expecting you.

I, for one, would be terrified of what disease might be transmitted to my other birds, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, this bird needs some help - that much is clear and (philosophically) you must be the one.

Someday I may find myself with a bird like this and I know I will have a hard tIme turning away.

The real question is: God only knows what kind of conditions this guy is providing for his birds and how many others are like the one you have?

Sad.

She is gorgeous, that is, if she is a female! At least she was free so you could pay for her vet bills a little easier.

The guy certainly doesn't know what he's talking about. Females cannot be split.

Monica, can you tell me a bit more about Psittacosis.
I haven't had her tested as my vet reckons she doesn't have it, no nasal or eye discharge but is there more you can tell me than what I have read on the net so far
She doesn't have any symptoms except for one sore swollen eye

I am still worried about this disease though

What does testing involve?

got Doxycycline from vet today

She is doing bit better though but not eating much seed. She does however, absolutely love vegies (how good and unusual is that :) perhaps she just knows that that is what she needs right now  ) and finished a whole Bok Choy leaf today and really like the fresh piece of corn on the cob I had in her cage yesterday.
I gave her a bath today and blowdried her afterwards (on warm setting, not hot of course) she really enjoyed that and just sat there with her eyes closed, occasionally ruffling her feathers :D

Her droppings were normal today, you should have seen them on Saturday after the Ivermectin treatment, it was a total disgrace and no bird should have that many worms in their system

I'm glad you took this bird in. It sounds like it wouldn't have lived much longer without you!

I believe my vet did the psittacosis test with a blood draw.

She is eating like a horse today :D

And yeah, Monica, not too sure if she is a she but she sure sounds like a she cuz she only ever makes the one sound, SCREAMING

She is going nuts in that cage inside
I so want to put her in the patio aviary outside so she can fly at least but vet said to wait a week.......
She is also sooooo loud I am worried she will disturb my pair, Noah and Meg, who have just started mating and have now got the nestbox in with them :(
What do you guys think?
I can put her all the way over on the other side of the garden but one problem, that is right next to a wall where our neighbours cat likes to sit
I was going to have her quite a distance from my aviary but still close enough for her to see them though........
The other option is to leave her with someone I know until she is better but this person has loads of aviaries already............(she did offer  )

The ino male split to pearl is an anomoly: it is not an ordinary occurence for a male to carry a pair of sex-linked genes (the double ino, which makes him look albino) plus an extra pearly gene which is also sex-linked, and makes him split to pearly.
I don't have it in whiteface, but my lutino male paired with a pearly hen produced a pearly daughter...I was expecting a son.
This young hen lays eggs, but she is not fertile...but I might be wrong on that, and I might pair her with another male. Also, I have seen lutino-pearly hens (yellow and white birds with pearly yellow markings)...but I have never seen that combination in males.

to be honest Alhee, the guy I got her from was so dodgy, I don't trust one single word of what he told me about her.
And because of that, I can not and will not breed with her.
I just don't know what her genetic make-up is :(
She could be much older than he told me, she could have been inbred, I just don't know and will never know

This bird, Lucky we have tentatively named her  , is going to be living with a very experienced bird handler :D
She still is quite unwell and I just do not have the time, experience and energy at the moment to look after her especially since my breeding pair of cockatiels have just started nesting.
Also with Dash (my budgie) just having been very ill, I really want to be able to just enjoy the birds, especially with babies on the way.
Lucky is going to need more tlc then I can give her at the moment so I felt it would be better for her to go and live with this lady.
This lady has lots of birds, has handreared many babies and has brought back quite a few birds from the "brink of death" including two budgies with the worst case of scaley face I had ever seen photos of
Once Lucky is completely well again she will put her in the big aviary with the budgies and other tiels.

I have now found a healthy hen, she is only young, 8 weeks tomorrow so no breeding her till next year.
The two males I now have left from last year's clutch are young still anyway, they will be 1 next month so if I breed them next year they will be a good age to raise a clutch.
The hen is a whiteface split for pied, here is a picture of her, again as yet unnamed

OMG that poor little tiel. I cannot imagine what that poor bird's previous living situation was like especially since this bird was loaded with worms. How is her eye? is it getting better?
