malabsorption

Postby bostonbudgie on Wed Jul 29, 2009 11:23 am

Button went in for some blood work and her poop checked again for yeast. I didn't get to talk to vet at the time so i will call later for the results but the vet tech said that Button's poop showed signs of "malabsorption".
I understand malabsorption means she is not processing her food normally but what does that mean? Why?
Any ideas?

Most of the time it is caused by an infection. I would definetly check with the vet if there is any bacterial infection going on.

Looked up malabsorption, and here's some things that came up...
Alpha chain disease
Cryptosporidiosis
Coeliac disease
(aka celiac disease - treatment is a gluten free diet)
Whipple's disease

Harrison's Avian Enzyme is said to help birds who are suffering from malabsorption syndrome. I don't mean to frighten you or anything, but if it's something that's suspected then it would be a good idea to speak with your avian vet about. Aslo ask about DMG (Dimethylglycine).

Best of luck with Button!

I am still waiting to hear from the vet. I was hoping I would ASAP about the gram stain/malabsorption situation but no matter I have to call them next week to find out the results from the blood test. I had her tested for PBFD.
This poor little bird has not been well for 7 years. If you could see the 1.5inch thick stack of vet documents/bills I have for her.I do everything I can for her. Poor Button
She weighs 123grams BTW.
