Routine vet visit

Postby bostonbudgie on Fri Jul 03, 2009 8:18 am

Well since Fresh Baby had that incident with the impacted egg 2 weeks ago I had made routine vet check-ups for Eddie and Button. Eddie had regurgitated two weeks ago so I brought her in for a check. Everything was A-Ok with her. She was healthy & normal. I brought Button along since she always has feather/skin issues and I routinely bring her in for annual check-ups.
It turned out Button had another yeast infection (this seems to be an ongoing thing with her) plus two huge feather cysts. The doctor removed one of them and it was nasty. It looked a like a white curled up worm. After it was removed Button started to pick the area. It started to bleed and woudn't stop. I had to get the doctor to cauterize the wound. She will be on anti-fungal meds for two weeks. I made a follow-up appointment for her for a recheck and a blood test.(july 31)
Since she always has immune system problems she will be tested for PBFD. If it indeed comes up positive she would have had it for 7 years. I am sick to think it is possible she could have this nasty virus. Other than that she is always happy, alert and has a good appetite.Poor Button :(

Isn't PBFD contagious to the other birds?? If she's had it for seven years, and other birds around her haven't shown any symptoms, then wouldn't it be more likely that she doesn't have it? I sure hope that Button is feeling better soon!

I wouldn't doubt it if Button has some ongoing viral situation-hopefully not PFBD. None of the birds have had any of the problems she has had plus we had babies (Fresh baby & Eddie) born when we had Button. It is just so strange that she continually has feather cysts, weird feather growth, she constainly picks at her skin and has yeast issues. I have a stack of reciepts from various vets seeing Button that is about 1.5inches thick.

I had another gram stain done on Button and it was Ok despite a hint of malabsorption. I had her tested for PBFD as well since she has had problems all along . That turned up negative (thank God) however she will go in for routine blood work to check for everything.

Would it be worth your while to put her on probiotics for a while?
I know you would normally give them after a.b. use but it might be good to get some good bacteria into her with regards to those yeast infections.......
