New road with Pesto

Postby Pesto on Fri Jul 03, 2009 6:12 am

Hi there all
Sorry that I have been so quiet. I am really beyond busy at work and it is the only place that I have internet access - living in Africa and all (JUST KIDDING!!!! It seems that I am the only person who doesn't have internet at home).

Quick update - Pesto is doing very well. Both his beaks are growing. The only problem is that the bottom one is growing so fast that every little bit that the top one grows gets ground down by the bottom one. A bit of a problem, as ideally we would like to top one to grow past the bottom one and become complete. So, I discussed the options with my vet. His first suggestion was to take the bottom beak off until it is so small that it will take a long time to grow back. This will then give the top beak time to grow. BUT this would mean going back onto handfeeding Pesto and causing him a lot of stress. My vet has also advised that there is a chance that while climbing in his cage, Pesto might crack the remainder of his bottom beak. This will be the end of him. Obviously the suggestion was just mentioned and never really considered by either my vet or myself.
So, the new plan of action is being implemented from tomorrow. I will be taking Pesto to the vet every week for the next 8 weeks or so. By doing a weekly trim, we should be able to give the top beak some time to grow. Up until now we've been doing a trim at 3 week intervals. I am really hoping that this will work. My vet is quite optimistic and has even said that he will charge me half price of the half price that I am already paying (R200 down to R50!) It does mean that I will have to travel 90km every week though. I was also worried about Pesto going under every week, but my vet assures me that it is safe. His words: After 25 years of experience, I can assure you that you don;t have to worry about it.
I intend taking photos of him every week to see if there is any progress. I will keep you posted.
If you pray, please keep us in mind. If you don't, please still keep us in mind!

Thanks

I was wondering how you & Pesto were :) I am glad Pesto is doing well but I guess it is like every "handicap" that it is an ongoing process. I am going through something similar with Button. this poor bird has gone through so much but she is still the friendliest sweetest bird.
Offsubject: I saw a show on animal planet called "animal precinct" that was filmed in South Africa's "cape town". It was a show on animal rescues.South Africa looked amazing!

Hey, I live in Cape Town!!!!! South Africa is an amazing country. The people are amazing, the sights and sounds, the food, the music, the weather. I doubt if I will ever leave. We still have a lot of work to do, because at world standards, we are a young country, but we have some awesome people making things work. AND Cape Town is the most beautiful place in the world...!
