Sucked in

Postby Claudia on Mon Jun 22, 2009 2:28 am

I got sucked into getting another budgie on the weekend
Image

This time it's going to be our indoor pet bird, the other two budgies are outside in a patio aviary.
This little baby is only young, even though he came from an aviary he is quite tame and not scared of humans or their hands  at all.
I think he is a recessive pied, I think he is gorgeous, the yellow is far brighter than in the pic.
I couldn't add him to my signature either, had run out of characters  so since I'm in "tiel land" here, I will keep just the tiels in my signature.......

Pretty sure he is a he as he has a pink cere with no white rings around the nostrils.
If I'm correct he is a recessive pied.
His name is Dash, cause he is dashingly handsome

Pleased to say he is settling in well, the only thing is he gets a bit wild when he hears the others outside :(
I feel a bit sad that I have him indoors alone, but we really want a pet budgie though, not another aviary budgie :?

How long do most of you guys wait with a new bird till you let them out of their cage for the first time to have a fly around the house? (wings are unclipped)

He is really beautiful! I haven't seen one like him before. Since he is already quite tame and not afraid of hands, I'm sure he will bond with you over the next few months and not be as interested or affected by the noises from the aviary outside. Even though Rickie was as tame as could be when we brought him home, and seemed to love us right away, now we see that he is much more comfortable and attached to us. As always, it just takes a little time. When we first had him home, he was in our TV room upstairs and we let him fly around in there immediately, but he was contained in that one room. He was also probably used to flying around in a house, so I'm not sure if it would be different with a bird that came from an aviary. After the quarantine period, we brought him downstairs and now he flys around down here, though we have a two story entry way, so he will often fly upstairs and make us come and find him. We usually take him to one room to play because otherwise we have to go through the whole house checking toilets and fans and putting the dog away!

Can I ask, when you take him to one room to play, do you take Ricky's cage with you? (assuming it's not too big or heavy to carry  )

Well, during the quarantine period when he was upstairs and we let him out to play, his cage was always there and it was definitely a source of security because he would always fly back to it and sit on top of it. He really likes his cage a lot, but now, I will bring him into the office with me or my daughter will take him to her room without his cage and he is fine as long as he is wide awake, full of food and ready to play. He just flys around and interacts with us. We have noticed though that if he is sleepy or hungry, he definitely wants to be in his cage rather than just sitting on our shoulder and resting or filling up on the veggies that we usually have out for them. Raisin, on the other hand, will stay out and sleep, eat, play all day with us if we let her!

The only time I move them in their cages (Raisin's is big, but is on wheels and Rickie's is easy to carry), is sometimes when they are restless and won't be quiet, I bring them into my office while I'm working and they seem to stay quite content sitting in their cages with me right there (when I'm working from home).

I am very pleased to say that Dash got used to flying around within a few days, he has already worked out where his cage is and flies straight into it, he already knows to avoid windows so no more need to draw the blinds  and he also flies to me when I call him with my arm outstretched!!!!! How good is that??!!!
We love him to bits :D

lol yeah definite brats
So far he has been such a good boy, unbelievable really for a bird that was never handled :D
He is getting more cheeky now for sure, nibbles your clothes and was nibbling my daughter's hand before, softly but still, gotta keep an eye on that I guess, don't want a bitey bird
I just love the fact that he comes to you when you call him!
