Advice needed

Postby Claudia on Thu Jun 18, 2009 9:46 pm

hi guys

would appreciate some opinions.......
We have a site called Petrescue in Oz and I browse on it frequently as eventually I would like to get another dog (hubby says NO at the moment  ) and I just enjoy looking at the pet profiles and seeing which ones get adopted (and sadly, which ones don't get adopted for a very long time :( )
Anyway, the other day there was an ad on it for a cockatiel that needs a good home.
I would love to be able to give this fella a new home but..........
Will my tiels readily accept a stranger into their flock?
I have a double cage aviary.
One part houses Meg and Noah (mum and dad) and the other part their 3 sons that I've kept.
The boys are turning one in September......
I was going to put the strange bird (after quarantine of course) in with the 3 boys.

No matter how much I would love to adopt this little guy (it says he is a boy) my first concern is definitely my own flock.
What do you guys reckon?
The aviary is not huge by the way........

With a new bird it can go either way, usually they will accept a newcomer if the introduction is slow.
Owned by birds since 1988.

thanks Christie

I only have a standard indoor cage at present that I could put him in.
Being (by the sounds of it) a "wild" bird I don't think that is so ideal.
I would need another patio aviary ideally.
I have one, but the budgies are in that one.
I think I will give it some more thought and hopefully in the meantime someone will adopt the little fella :)

A stand cage wouldn't be bad. You can take the quarantine time to tame him. My oldest bird was "wild" when I got him too, and he is now the only tiel that will stay and cuddle.

Eventually yes, they would all have fun in an aviary, but give that time.

I think he would come with his own little cage, perhaps after his quarantine is done, you could place his cage near the other birds and start the interaction like that. See if they pay any interest to him, move him closer, slowly and see how it goes. Just what I would do anyways.

He would have come without a cage but that's okay.......
I have decided though to leave it, especially since I have a breeding pair and want to breed them again coming Spring.
If I get a really nice clutch of bubs again, I will probably decide to keep one (not three, like last time  )
Also, just got the new budgie so that'll do for now
