Screaming Cockatiel

Postby princess_jen1234 on Tue Jun 16, 2009 7:03 pm

Help me, PLEEEEASEEEEEE!!!!!

For the past 8 years, I have been bringing my 9 year old male cockatiel with me to my cottage every weekend during the summer. Usually, he is quite happy to go, takes the car ride well, happy hanging out at the cottage. But this year all he wants to do is scream there! He screams ALL DAY LONG, non-stop. And I mean loud!, really loud, so loud that the neighbours are asking " what is that noise?"

I cant figure out what his problem is, he does'nt scream like that at home. When I try covering up his cage, that just makes him scream even more! Nothing has changed in the cottage, I give him his 10-12 hours of sleep.

My parents are saying he cant come up anymore, because he driving everyone nuts. But for me, thats not an option, hes my buddy. Plus he'll freak if he has to spend a weekend alone.

What can I do to stop his screaming at the cottage?

Sounds like he is either looking for you, or is frightened by something. Have you tried another location? Contact whistling to him when you are out of the room? New toys?

It could be something like a changed location for his cage in the cottage, new decorations in the cottage ??, wild birds hanging around outside that are setting him off.........
Shame if you can't bring him anymore but can also understand the screaming would drive everyone nuts
I have only aviary birds and sometimes they call really loud, it is a fairly high pitched "two sounds" call which to me is their "alarm" call and they normally do it when they hear other parrots.

My male will scream if his mate is missing or even if one of the other flock memebers is missing. He is calling. if you take him out of the cage and comfort him will he stop calling? It is possible another cockatiel or even a big scary bird (hawk. owl) nearby. Just a thought...

Nothing has changed in the cottage, still the same from last year.

Its not a lonely scream thats he's doing. (I know that cry quite well!)

I was wondering if clipping his wings would help? He likes to fly EVERYWHERE inside in the cottage, he's currently obsessed with chirping at the radio in one of the bedrooms when its on. (Strange bird, I know.)

If he's screaming as though something is scaring him, I'd be inclined to consider what might be going on OUTSIDE the cottage. Are there crows?, hawks?, eagles? Could there be something living underneath the cottage? Your bird is likely much more sensitive to the environment then you realize.

Of course, if there is some kind of wildlife out there that he is reacting to, then there is really nothing you can do about it except hope that whatever it is moves on... at least by next year.

UPDATE: Clipping his wings has shut him up! Thank god! Now he's a well- beheaved, non-screamer, little boy again.
