straining..egg?

Postby bostonbudgie on Tue Jun 16, 2009 6:53 am

Last night I noticed poor fresh baby was straining trying to poop. Her bum was messy too. I washed her off to check what was going on. Nothing was unusual. no reddness or swelling. I put her in her own cage with calcium water and heating pad. the next day she pooped what looked like an "ready to lay an egg" poop. She has never laid before and she is 4 years old. I was glad to see she pooped but she continued to strain with a messy bum and stopped pooping. I made an appointment for her this afternoon.
Has anyone experienced this before?

I saw this a few years ago with an eggbound gouldian hen. Put her in an incubatorbrooder (fishtank if nothing better) raise the temprature to 85 degrees, give her liquid calcium orally, and make the "incubator/brooder" as humid as you can, drape a towel over the top to keep the moisture in.

Keep her calm and comfortable in there until the vet appointment and hope she passes the egg.

Good luck on your vet visit and hope she lays the egg soon with no problems. Someone on my lovie forum just had the same kind of thing going on with her lovie and she layed the egg the next day.....that time of year I guess. let us know how it goes at the vet.

I came home at lunchtime to check on her. Her bum was messy again so I washed it. This time I felt something round and hard.
I do beleive it is an egg. I've had other birds have trouble laying eggs but never like this so in a few hours she is off to the vet.
She is drinking the calcium water and i have her in a cage with a heating pad...

Some undiluted calcium that goes in the water is best when eggbound. The sugar in the mixture gives the hen energy to help express the egg. Humidity is super important, get her in a brooder...
This is for finches, but the process is the same. Just omit the oil, it doesn't help.

It was a good thing I brought her to the vet. Poor fresh baby. This is the first time this has ever happened. She was straining terribly. the vet said it was good thing I brought her because she would not been able to expell the egg. it was abnormally hard and large (!?) She expressed the egg (punctured it) She was pooping blood last night and today she is pooping green poops and yellow urites but at least she is pooping. She is on baytril now too. She is thirsty but not really hungry. She is tired too. Hopefully she will be Ok after this ordeal. At least her bum looks better than it did

I would keep her on the calcium and keep a close eye on her. Where one egg comes from, there may be more, and I'm sure she is tired after all that!!

Glad she went into the vet and they were able to help.

Good thing you took her to the Dr.. I hope shes feeling ok.. This is a stupid question I am sure but if the dr punctured the egg, how will she rid herself of it?

Oh God I hope she doesn't have any more  I have her on calcium water too.
She is still sleepy & tired but at least she is eating and her poop looks better.
She pooped out what looked like yolk & blood clots plus "egg poop" (green mess)
The birds have been more hormonal that usual. Eddie regurgitated on me which was a first.

I'd call and see what they say about the pus, that doesn't sound good to me.

Keep her warm and calm. I hope she pulls through this, it doesn't sound like she is out of the woods yet.

No pus.Just a messy "egg poop"
Her poop is looking more & more normal but she is still not herself. I just hope that was it for egg laying.
