Sad Vision

Postby sadielynn on Wed Mar 25, 2009 3:06 pm

Yesterday (ok and a couple other days too) I had some things that I needed to donate off , and while some of it may have been good for the salvation army or such , I just could NOT shake this feeling that we are in hard times , our selfs included , my husband has been layed off and I do not work out side the home. We suppliment our incomes with an online auction . What must it be like for our pets
So I had some towels and a comforter that were old and a bit tattered , and some foods that the cats refused to eat (fininky lil buggers and they had to decide they like the $20 LB food   but now of all times)
We kinda knew we were headed for this life change so we started to "rebudget" ourselfs to get us through this , and since we do not know how long this will last we are hunkering down for the long haul .
This is not just effecting us but others as well , having to take pets to the pound and give up thier pals .
SO as I cleaned up our basement and am trying to thin out a bit , we took our "treasures " to the ASPCA .
We saw some sad kitties , and pups that were just left with no buddies to call thier own . As I was leaving I spied with my eyes 2 lil cockatiels that were seized. They were in the office of the director . I ask if I may see them , she allowed it , as I talked to her she ask how I knew about birds. I told her that I have some of my own . She sorta questioned me if I saw anything wrong with thier set up , and in my opinion I did . She told me these guys were there for the long haul , that the owner had a court date but did not show and they had been in "protective custody" nearly 6 months . I saw some gravel/grit to which I told her that it was dangerous , she immideatly removed it and dumped it out . The had 2 pathetic perches and 2 little toys ! My heart broke ,she said no one ever takes into consideration that animals of all types are dumped ,from fish , to birds , bunnies ,hampsters, guine pigs and the list goes on and on . As I left the littlest one called out to me , I said that I would be back ! I got home and I could NOT stand they had no toys and over grown toenails (they are not allowed to clip them since they are not the ASPCA's property ) So I found some things that did not fit my cages and I hurry scurried to make up some toys (no cost to me since I had the stuff here already) I ended up with 5 toys .I rushed them back that afternoon (this only took me a 1/2 hour to do ) Not nearly enough this bothered me greatly , so I remember seeing some rope things for dogs that you toss and some other things that could be made into instant toys and swings . I went ahead and spent the 10 bucks for that and all hardware needed I constructed one extra toy , 2 wood perches , donated 1 concrete perch and 2 booda swings that I made , and 2 pine dowel rod perches and took them over today . When I arrived some of the new toys were already there in the cage to which they had already started to play with . I gave them on one condition that if they were to be adopted out , or went back to the abusive person the TOYS WENT TOO !
I guess the moral of this is that check your local shelters there are more than pups and kittens there I would be willing to bet , and perhaps we could accomidate our feathered friends with some toys that we have and no longer use ! It only takes a moment to be a hero to them and the impact lasts a life time for them .

Sadielynn - What a wonderful generous gesture!! I am sure the director looks at the birds playing with the toys and thinks of the sweet angel who came to help make their lives better. Thanks for the push - I'll will look in on my local shelter to see what I could do too.

Aw thank you . Some of this was done selfishly tho I must admit  This is a big part of me letting go of some things that I had here for Neeko , whom passed away nearly 4 years ago. This is to help me to say goodbye and to forage for some closure that I so despratly need .. I still hurt when I see one that resembles her . I also hurt when I see the bag of toys that I got her that she never got to play with . Her cage still sits as it did the day she was called to rainbow bridge . They were given in her name .. I told them these were not from me but the lil angel that watches her friends from above ... I would not let them pay anything for them even tho a couple staff members wanted to donate a couple bucks to them . Nope I dont care I dont want it these were a gift from one far greater than I ..I guess I feel more pain that I lost her and loved her so much ! Yet others have and just dont give a damn ! How this is I just do not know , then there are others that care but just are NOT educated , like our neighbor , When ever I can I talk to her momma to let her know , that we are still here if they need help ... She is a conure and has the most horrible overgrown nails that they wanted me to trim but they are curled over , I do not feel safe doing this and recommended a vet who could do this and observe her as there will be bleeding ! So I think that when I get a day and can scrounge up a few bucks I will take lil Zoe to the vet for the trims she needs ! This should not be my job but she is just a lonly lil bappy. I gave her momma a cement perch that I made in hopes this will help till I can come up with the monies to get them done for her ! ah well enough of a rant ..

OMG that is so sad poor little babies.. My heart breaks for animals that have no one to love them, they are so innocent and accepting of everyone all they want is someone to love them and they return so much more to the ones who do :(.. That was very nice of you to do, there was a reason that you were sent there to donate the stuff you did, those little birdies needed you to see them & help them. Thats a wonderful idea, I have a brand new bag of RoudyBush California blend pellets that Rosie didn't like and a whole bunch of toys that she don't like and has never paid any interest in so I should see if there are any needy babys here at our shelters that I can donate them to.

Sadielyn, with regards to the Conure how about you use some ordinary human nail clippers, but the small ones you'd use on a child, and just take off tiny little amounts at a time to minimise the risk of injury?
    Worth a try??

Good for you for helping the tiels at the shelter!!!!

You could take them in and donate them so they have em . Our shelter allowes open foods as well . We use to buy our cat food in bulk when they decided they didnt like it , I seal ours in food saver bags ...They may take your info to assure you didnt posion it . I know you didnt but they dont . :) If they wont take them you could send them to another shelter via post office flat rate box under 15 bucks ... I wish others could have seen these guys and would help them !

I would do that but these are curled so bad that I am afraid of hitting the quick and causing issues .
A vet could /would watch her .. Zoe has issues walking and getting caught up on the cage bars due to this ..
For the longest time they only fed her capncrunch . I took some of our stuff over from pelets to seed .
I also told them that any thing they eat that she could have but I also told them what was a NO NO . A few days later they said she likes scrambled eggs ! And she loves banannas ! I told them just to keep offering it up with the other stuff as long as she beaked it it was her effort in trying it ;)
I have said this in the past if I had the money and means I would save them all ..But alas I can not :(
Sad part is it is only 20 bucks to get the nails done professionally and once they are done with the proper perches they would only have to clip the tips just to keep them from being super sharp. I did not want to cause any harm to her by pushing it and perhaps stressing her out unnessessarly ...I do ask thme just about every day or 2 if they got her in . I even told them where to get a crate to put her in for less than 10 bucks ! Sure they are used but you can clean and disinfect them quite simply ..
One final thought .... as these economic times continue to spiral out of control we will see many pets left behind , and if we are not cautious it could happen to us ... Quite simply , remember that this is a hard time in our lives that could leave any one to suffer including our pets ..
