Poor Squeaker.

Postby Squattle on Sun Mar 22, 2009 3:16 pm

Hi I have a 6 year old lutino cockatiel named Squeaker and unfortunately due to a stupid mistake I've made, she got attacked by my cat. It's not life-threatening, at least I don't think so. But she has a long scratch down one of her sides. :( It's pretty deep but didn't puncture her body cavity. I've put triple antibiotic ointment on it for now but I can't have her seen till tomorrow morning and it happened last night. She's acting like her normal self for the most part, just more subdued then usual. She can still fly and everything and she's still perching. She's not trying to pick at the wound much but I'm a little worried about how much ointment she's ingesting considering how little she is. It says on the tube not to ingest it. Am I worried over nothing? :(

You are right to be very worried, not only about ingesting the cream, which I would continue at this point, but because cat claws are filled with bacteria and your poor birdie may be more injured because of this than you know. I would keep her warm and calm, avoiding excess exercise until she is in the vet tomorrow. I would insist on an early appointment since this injury will have had time to cause infection in her blood.

Cat saliva is also extremely dangerous to birds, please keep them completely seperate.

Let us know what the vet says tomorrow.
