new caique

Postby matt on Tue Jan 20, 2009 8:52 am

A week ago I purchased my first feathered friend. A 4 month old BH Caique.
He seems to have settled in really well. However, whenever I go into the kitchen he paces around on the bottom of his cage and often screams. He screams even more when the tap is running. Is this usual caique behavior? What is the best way for me to react to this behaviour?
Eko (the Caique) is really good at stepping up to come out of his cage but its often a struggle to get him to step down into cage when im returning him after playtime.

Im obviously a new user to this forum but look forward to contributing further in the future.

Congrats on your new baby! Owning a caique can be challenging but as long as you keep a firm grasp on his behavior, you will both be fine. Remember, YOU"RE THE BOSS :)

As for the screaming when you walk away, your new baby is trying to contact call you! :) Try strarting a whistle when he starts screaming, and he'll know where you are. He may even pick that whistle up and you guys can do it back and forth. Remember you're part of his flock.

There are SO many wonderful experienced caique owners on here and they'll have a TON of advice for you :)

Welcome and please post some pics of your new little one! :)

Oh and my caique always screeched and chrips and sings when the water is running, when the vaccum is going, when the washing machine, anything loud she LOVES! I think there are a bunch of people on here have caiques that react to loud sounds.

    Hey Matt and welcome !!!!!

Owning (being owned) a Caique can be extremely rewarding or very frustrating. Just some quick advice - go back thu the posts and read every single one !!!!!!! There have been and are many happy Caique people on this site and we all have diff stories to tell and share.

One of the very first thing I taught our boy Cisco was a contact call Get to work on that TODAY !!!!!!!!! Please read and do not hesitate to ask questions.

And yes = Cisco loves to hear water run also. He makes "water" noises and gets very excited. He LOVES bathtime !!!!!!!

Cisco hates to go back in to his house, too. He would rather be out than in - although once in he plays very well with his toys. They are very busy birds

Ha ha welcome to the world of caiques.. Do u know what you've let yourself in for?? They must be the naughtiest parrots ever but also the funniest. When i hear about a caique stepping down i laugh my head off.. Try carrying him home kicking & screaming more like! They are the toddlers of the fid world. But, as Freddy said, once kip is in his cage he'll play happily beating the crap out of something or other.. My pi learnt the sound of people peeing in our downstairs loo years ago & although he was moved way before we got kip, when i run a tap now they both make like they're having a tinkle.. It's hilarious! You will have so much fun with your feathered clown.. Keep us posted! Kes :-D
